The dates of celebration of Novruz on March 21 - 22 fall on the spring solstice when the day equals with the night fully. With it the new season of agriculture begins and care and work of cultivators grow.

The day of spring solstice is marked in many countries. It is general known that on this day winter gives its place to summer, darkness to light, nature awakens and life assumes new colors. Novruz lives many ages and people believe that more joyous and cheerful it will pass, more generous nature will be towards people. Therefore, on these days people sing songs of Novruz, dance, and make merriment. They are happy for the onset of spring; exchange presents and helps the needy. The history of this spring festival accounts not for one millennium. Novruz was a festival of ancient cultivators. Cultivators have celebrated it from time immemorial as a beginning of spring field work accompanied with merriment, traditional rituals called to promote good harvest. Novruz is an international festival and it is not without reason that at the 64th session of the UN General Assembly on February 19, 2010, within the framework of point 49 of its agenda “World culture” the resolution on recognition of March 21 as international day of Novruz.


Novruz glorifies reverence for abundance which people achieve due to their care and hard work on the mother earth. On Novruz people wish realization of their drams-they dreamed of rains, good pastures, and rich harvest. On these days ancestors of Turkmens organized a feat in honor of the patron of rain Burkut baba so that he send them rain to grow good harvest as the high harvest directly depended on it. After Novruz as elders say, one can sow without any fear of colds.

According to traditions, preparation for the festival begins long before its onset. In all households people do cleaning of houses, buy new dresses for all members of the family, and fill their houses with aroma of flowers. It is believed that the work, which will be done during festive days, will be done in the entire year and for this reason, it is customary to forgive offences.

The main symbol of abundance and prosperity of every family on Novruz is a rich tablecloth and treatment of all neighbors to national foods. Indeed, it is believed that more you give to your close, more luck you would have. All beginning from children to elders, used to go their neighbors with their dishes, to taste foods, bless, congratulate each other, wish health, prosperity and rich harvest.

Novruz is an ancient festival but every epoch fills it with new things and enriches it with new customs. It has become a good tradition to perform dramatized events which help the modern generation to make a journey to the epoch of our ancestors who celebrated Novruz on their own, as well as to plant trees, give concerts on squares and parks and lay a rich tablecloth on every house. Preparing for celebration of Novruz people clean their hearts from offences sincerely hoping that their place will be filled love and goodness.
