Turkmenistan - Armenia: the course for diversification of the mutually beneficial partnership

The top level talks between President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov and President of the Republic of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan, who had arrived on an official visit to the Turkmen capital, took place in Ashgabat.

The one-to-one talks took place in the Golden Hall.

President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov and President of the Republic of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan discussed a wide range of issues related to the Turkmen-Armenian cooperation paying particular attention to implementation of the bilateral agreements achieved earlier and the existing opportunities for the further development of the mutually beneficial relations in various spheres. The leaders of the two states also exchanged the views on a number of important issues of the regional and international policy that are of particular interest for Turkmenistan and the Republic of Armenia.

Then the government delegations of Turkmenistan and Armenia joined in the talks which took place in the Gorkut Ata Hall.

Speaking about the political aspect of the Turkmen-Armenian interstate dialogue, the Turkmen leader underlined that Turkmenistan collaborated with the Republic of Armenia within such authoritative structures as the UN, OSCE, and CIS.


Specifying the trade and economic sphere as a priority area for cooperation between the two countries, the President of Turkmenistan suggested to widen the trade and economic relations, increase the volumes of exports and imports, and improve the nomenclature of the goods delivered to the countries. In this regard, the Turkmen leader also underlined the importance of work of the two countries within the specialized international structures, in particular the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific. Turkmenistan is interested in cooperation with Armenia in such spheres as power energy, mechanical engineering, pharmaceuticals, electronics, agriculture, food industry as well as is ready to discuss the opportunities for implementation of joint investment projects and other forms of cooperation. The President of Turkmenistan also put forward the initiative on establishment of business councils, holding specialized exhibitions in Turkmenistan and Armenia as well as building cooperation in the sphere of science.

President of the Republic of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan expressed satisfaction with the regular contacts between the foreign-policy agencies of Turkmenistan and Armenia. The high ranking guest also underlined the positive dynamics of the bilateral inter-parliamentary relations. Speaking about the trade and economic cooperation, the President of the Republic of Armenia emphasized the huge potential for its further development, and increase of the bilateral trade turnover.

Noting that the top level meetings play a significant role in the successful development of the intergovernmental dialogue, President of the Republic of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan invited the President of Turkmenistan to visit Armenia at any convenient time.

The invitation was accepted with gratitude. Dates of the visit will be adjusted through diplomatic channels.

In conclusion, the distinguished guest expressed deep gratitude to the President of Turkmenistan for the cordial welcome and fruitful negotiations and addressed the best wishes to the people of Turkmenistan.

The ceremony of signing bilateral documents took place in the Seldjuk Khan Hall after the talks.

Among the documents signed during the ceremony are the Agreement on cooperation between the Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs of Turkmenistan and the Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs of (employers) of the Republic of Armenia; the Agreement on cooperation between the Turkmen National Institute of Tourism and Sport and the Armenian State Institute of Physical Culture; the Agreement on establishment of the relations of friendship and cooperation between Ashgabat (Turkmenistan) and Erevan (the Republic of Armenia); the Memorandum on Mutual Understanding between the Turkmenhowayollary State National Service and the General Department of Civil Aviation of the Republic of Armenia for 2014-2015; the Agreement between the Government of Turkmenistan and the Government of the Republic of Armenia on establishment of trade agencies in Turkmenistan and the Republic of Armenia.

To the applause of those present President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov and President of the Republic of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan affixed their signatures to the Joint Communiqué between Turkmenistan and the Republic of Armenia.

After concluding the signing ceremony, the leaders of the two states held a press conference on the outcomes of the Ashgabat talks in the Bayram Khan Hall.

Commenting on the outcomes of the top level talks in Ashgabat, President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov expressed deep gratitude to the President of the Republic of Armenia and Armenian partners for the constructive talks held in the atmosphere of mutual understanding, respect and equal cooperation.

The President of Turkmenistan noted that Turkmenistan and the Republic of Armenia had once again confirmed their adherence to the close bilateral cooperation and focused on the existing potential for the further intensification of the Turkmen-Armenian relations in various spheres.

Summing up the talks, the President of the Republic of Armenia underlined that the progress of development of the Turkmen-Armenian relations had been discussed and the key trends for the future were specified within the framework of the top level talks. The distinguished guest noted that the issues of the trade and economic cooperation were also discussed during the meeting and emphasized the huge potential of cooperation in such spheres as power energy, light and textile industry and agriculture.

In the afternoon, President of the Republic of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan visited Gypjak where he paid tribute to the memory of the first President of Turkmenistan and laid flowers to his mausoleum.

The President of the Republic of Armenia headed to the south of the Turkmen capital and laid flowers to the Monument of Constitution. By tradition, President Serzh Sargsyan planted a tree in the Park of Guests of Honour as a symbol of eternal friendship between the two con tries and peoples.

In the evening President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov gave an official dinner in honour of President of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan. The leaders of Turkmenistan and the Republic of Armenia exchanged speeches during the official reception. As a symbol of the unbreakable friendship between the peoples of the two countries, President of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan awarded the collection of works by Magtymguly Fraghi published in the Armenian language to the President of Turkmenistan.
