The national holiday - Victory Day - is widely and solemnly celebrated in Turkmenistan on May 9. This remarkable date occupies an important place in the national calendar as a symbol of patriotism and outstanding courage of the Turkmen people. President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov attended the ceremony of laying flowers in Ashgabat to the memorial monument to Turkmen warriors who perished in the 1941-1945 war.
Early in the morning, thousands of citizens and guests of Ashgabat came to the monument, in the centre of which the Eternal Flame burns as a symbol of the people's unquenchable memory, to pay tribute to the cherished memory of their fellow countrymen, who never returned home from the fields of the bloodiest war in human history. The cabinet ministers, the heads of the national parliament, military and law enforcement agencies, ministries and departments, public organisations, mullahs and students gathered together at the monument. The ceremony participants included the heads of diplomatic representations and missions accredited to Turkmenistan. War veterans and those who worked day and night on the home front during the severe years of war were honorary participants of the festivities.

The Turkmen leader Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov walked from the Oguzhan Presidential Palace to the esplanade which leads to the memorial monument built in honour of National Heroes of Turkmenistan.
Cordially welcoming the war veterans and home front workers, the President warmly congratulated them on Victory Day. Thanking the veterans for their unforgettable feat of arms and labour, President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov emphasized that today our Motherland - independent neutral Turkmenistan that they had defended bravely and heroically against fascism in the 1941-1945 war was known worldwide as the country committed to the principles of peace, good neighbourliness and progress.
The Turkmen leader said that we all were eternally indebted to those who had sacrificed their lives to bring closer the great victory that was of paramount importance from a historical point of view and for patriotic upbringing of the younger generation. President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov said that selfless courage of war and labour veterans, their lives set a brilliant example of the devotion to the people and Motherland.
Emphasizing that unprecedented valour of the participants in military operations, courage of our countrymen and their feats of labour in the home front during the years of war, the President noted that war and labour veterans tremendously contributed to strengthening the unity and cohesion of our society. The Turkmen leader said that the Government would continue to take care of war and labour veterans and selfless soldiers' widows and show unceasing concern for their health and social and living conditions.
The war and labour veterans expressed profound gratitude to the President of Turkmenistan for showing the unceasing concern for war veterans and the families of fallen soldiers, providing numerous benefits and decent social and living conditions and implementing the large-scale programmes of reforms aimed at the welfare and prosperity of the Motherland. This concern arouses the feeling of immense gratitude not only in war and labour veterans, but also all citizens of Turkmenistan.

The silence fell on the square in front of the obelisk. The national anthem of Turkmenistan was played. A wonderful wreath of flowers was laid on behalf of President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov to the foot of the memorial monument.
Following the Turkmen leader, the war veterans, cabinet ministers, heads of the Mejlis, military and law enforcement agencies, public associations, foreign diplomats, numerous representatives of labour collectives, citizens and guests of Ashgabat laid flowers to the monument to the accompaniment of the wonderful melody Kechpelek. The ceremony participants observed a minute in the memory of the glorious sons of the Turkmen people who put their life on the altar of Great Victory. A fragrant carpet of fresh spring flowers covered the memorial monument a few minutes later. The guard of honour marched in front of the monument, measuring their steps.
