Turkmen-Hungarian top-level talks in Budapest

President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov arrived in Hungary for an official visit. The high-ranking officials of the state and government of Hungary and other officials greeted the Turkmen leader at Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport.

President of Hungary Janos Ader cordially greeted the Turkmen counterpart at his official residence – the Sandor Palace.

After the official greeting ceremony had concluded, the President of Hungary invited the Turkmen leader to enter the Sandor Palace. The leaders of Turkmenistan and Hungary enjoyed the splendid view of the impressive architectural ensemble from the terrace on the first floor of the Palace.

Then the leaders of Turkmenistan and Hungary held the one-to-one talks in the office of the President of Hungary.

The government delegations of the two countries held the talks in the Hall of Mirrors of the Sandor Palace.

The ceremony of signing bilateral documents took place after the talks had been concluded. The Agreement on Cooperation in Education, Science and Culture between the Government of Turkmenistan and the Government of Hungary, the Agreement on Economic Cooperation between the Government of Turkmenistan and the Government of Hungary, the Programme of Cooperation in Education between the Ministry of Education of Turkmenistan and the Ministry of Human Resources of Hungary, the Programme of Cooperation between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade of Hungary for 2014-2015, the Agreement on Technical Cooperation between the Main State Tax Service of Turkmenistan and the National Tax and Customs Administration of Hungary were signed. The leaders of Turkmenistan and Hungary put their signatures to the Joint Communiqué.

Then the leaders of Turkmenistan and Hungary gave a press conference. Noting that the issues related to energy transit, diversification of energy export routes and energy security had been discussed in detail during the talks with President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, President Janos Ader emphasized that the implementation of these projects was of paramount importance for the European region. In this context, the President of Hungary expressed support to the strategy of Turkmenistan that stood ready to contribute to enhancing energy security in Europe.

Hungary may offer advanced water management technology and water-saving systems. Ample opportunities exist to supply food products manufactured in Hungary to Turkmenistan and promote well-established cooperation in pharmaceutical industry. President Janos Ader noted that his country attached importance to building up contacts in the fields of science, education and culture.

Turkmenistan is keenly interested in cooperation in Hungary’s higher education sector. Thousands of students from different countries come to Hungary and return home a few years later as qualified economists, physicians, teachers, etc. Henceforth, Turkmen boys and girls will join them.

Addressing the press conference, President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov reaffirmed that the sides had agreed to promote cooperation in a multilateral format, in particular within the UN and the OSCE.

President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov emphasized that Turkmenistan viewed Hungary as its key partner in the dialogue with the European Union that had gained momentum in recent years. A specific role in this process is assigned to energy cooperation. The Turkmen leader noted that the sides had called for closer cooperation in developing infrastructure of transit transport corridors between Asia and Europe, including within the specialized international organisations, in particular the UN Economic Commission for Europe.

The Turkmen leader noted that the sides had agreed to hold the Days of Culture in Hungary and Turkmenistan and promote relations in tourism and balneology, health care and sports, including in preparation for the Asian Games, which Ashgabat will host in 2017. The Turkmen leader invited the President of Hungary to visit Turkmenistan at any convenient time.

In the afternoon, the President of Turkmenistan had a meeting with the Speaker of the Hungarian National Assembly. The distinguished guest was briefed on the structure and activities of the supreme representative and legislative body of Hungary. President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov briefed the representatives of the Hungarian National Assembly on key priorities of the domestic and foreign policies of Turkmenistan, the structure and activities of Mejlis of Turkmenistan.

In the evening, President of Hungary Janos Ader gave an official dinner in honour of the President of Turkmenistan at the National Assembly building.
