President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov received Director General of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) William Lacy Swing and Director of
International Protection at UNHCR Headquarters Volker Turk, who arrived in Ashgabat to attend the International Conference on Migration and Statelessness.
Noting the high level of organization of the Ashgabat meeting that brought together representatives of dozens of international organisations and countries, the guests expressed belief that the joint conference would be a new critical step to address the global issues, such as the problem of refugees and stateless persons.
Cordially greeting the high-ranking representatives of the authoritative UN agencies working in this field, President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov emphasized that Turkmenistan was keenly interested in deepening fruitful cooperation and finding joint solutions to pressing problems of the modern world.
“Over the years, our country has accumulated the profound positive experience, in particular, admitting to citizenship and providing effective assistance to migrants and stateless persons, which, undoubtedly, can be called for and applied widely in international practices,” the Turkmen leader said, focusing on particular attention paid to the improvement of national legislation that ensures the protection of the rights and interests of this category of people.
In conclusion, the Turkmen leader and his guests exchanged best wishes and expressed firm belief that the high-level forum would contribute to achieving the goals of the third millennium, the most important of which is to create a favourable environment in the interests of the peoples of the planet.
