President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov attends the opening ceremony of the Windsurfing World Cup

President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, who is on a working trip to Balkan Velayat, visited the Yelken yacht club in Avaza, where he became the guest of honour at the opening ceremony of the Windsurfing World Cup - the competitions which first entered our country in the calendar of the international sailing tournaments.

The tournament organized by the Professional Windsurfer Association (PWA) started at the Yelken yacht club. 80 sportsmen from 22 countries, dozens of journalists, referees, coaches and fans arrived in Avaza.

The ceremony participants, including the cabinet ministers and the Chairperson of Mejlis, greeted the Turkmen leader at the entrance to the yacht club. President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov entered the office building of the Yelken yacht club, where he considered the new construction projects developed by the Turkish company Polimeks. The top managers of the Turkish company expressed their sincere gratitude to the Turkmen leader and their heartfelt congratulations and best wishes on his birthday.


The draft designs of the Congress Centre under construction in Avaza and other facilities buildings, including the general layout of the Engineering and Technology University, opera theatre, Conservatoire, community centre, school of music, sports centre and underground line in Ashgabat, were presented to the Turkmen leader for consideration.

The Turkmen leader provided some specific comments and suggestions regarding the functionality of new facilities and buildings. The President of Turkmenistan gave specific recommendations to the Turkish partners, emphasizing that the main guidelines for implementation of all the projects should be the advanced engineering thought, innovative technology and thoughtful, holistic and systematic approach. In this context, the Turkmen leader gave specific instructions to the high-ranking officials of the ministries and departments concerned.


Then the Turkmen leader headed to the seashore. On the way, the President visited an exposition of sand sculptures, which aroused his keen interest. Sportsmen presented the bright performances in beach football, volleyball and frisbee on the sports grounds located nearby.

The participants in the competitions, including the PWA Cup winners of previous years and the renowned marine racers greeted the leader of Turkmenistan. Among them was the windsurfing star, the 20-time world champion Antoine Albeau (France). Talking to the sportsmen, the Turkmen leader asked them about their sports career and the foundations of professionalism.


The President of Turkmenistan warmly greeted Chairman of the Professional Windsurfers Association Jimmy Diaz and exchanged views on the prospects for promoting sailing on the Caspian Sea coast. The guest noted that the Turkmen coast of the Caspian Sea had all opportunities to host international tournaments and involve Avaza in the international windsurfing industry. Jimmy Diaz expressed his sincere gratitude to President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov for providing support to the PWA Cup in Turkmenistan that joined the Association uniting about 60 countries.

At the request of sportsmen, the leader of Turkmenistan had a photo taken. Wishing them high results in the tournament, tailwind and soft waves, the Turkmen leader gave a symbolic start to the competitions.


After the water show had concluded, the President of Turkmenistan gave specific instructions to the high-ranking officials to ensure the high level of organisation of the competitions. Then the Turkmen leader bade farewell to the ceremony participants and left the ceremony venue.

Together with the renowned riders, who feature in the world ranking of windsurfers, Turkmen sportsmen will first participate in the slalom competitions. Argentina, Australia, Austria, Czech Republic, Denmark, Spain, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Israel, Japan, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Russia, Turkey, Ukraine, the United States and Venezuela are represented in the competitions. A total of 77 sportsmen are participating in the Avaza tournament.

Popular artists, famous folk singers and dance and folk groups from our country performed a concert on the stage near the sea built on the territory of the Yelken yacht club.
