The capital of Turkmenistan hosted the High-level International Conference on the Role of Transport and Transit Corridors in Ensuring International Cooperation, Stability and Sustainable Development was held at the Oguzkent Hotel.
The forum was organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Road Transport of Turkmenistan in collaboration with the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE), the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), the International Road Transport Union (IRU) and the Intergovernmental Commission on Transport Corridor Europe-Caucasus-Asia (TRACECA).
President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov attended the opening ceremony of the conference. As is known, the initiative to hold the High-level International Conference in Ashgabat was put forward by the Turkmen leader – the author of a number of constructive proposals for the intensification of international cooperation in the transport and communications sectors – from the rostrum of the UN General Assembly.
Addressing the conference, President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov emphasized that taking an active part in international affairs, Turkmenistan was making a worthy contribution to promoting transport cooperation on a global scale by putting forward a number of important initiatives.
The President said that the highways development projects had never been implemented on such a large scale over the history of the country. It is planned to reconstruct the major road network and build new autobahns with necessary road infrastructure in the country. Their total length is about 1,700 kilometres. The highest international standards will be the major criterion for the highways built throughout the country.
The President focused on the great importance attached in Turkmenistan to the development of the marine and necessary infrastructure. In this regard, a key aspect is the implementation of one of the ambitious projects - the international seaport in Turkmenbashi town launched in August of 2013.
The Turkmen leader said that Turkmenistan proposed that the expertise of International Road Transport Union (IRU), UNECE and ESCAP should be used to explore the possibility of building a Modal Highway in Central Asia with access to Turkey. The IRU’s initiative on the above highway is completely consistent with our vision of the prospects for developing transport routes in this direction.
The Turkmen leader emphasized that the vision of the region of Central Asia and the Caspian basin as a strong link of strategic stability in the southern belt of Eurasia, a promising economic partner for European and Asian countries and a major energy and transit transport hub of continental significance underlay the policy of international cooperation of Turkmenistan.
Executive Secretary of the UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE), Mr. Christian Friis Bach, Deputy Executive Secretary at the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), Mr. Shun-ichi Murata, Secretary General of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, Mr. Lamberto Zannier, President of the International Road Transport Union (IRU) Mr. Janusz Lacny, Secretary General of the Intergovernmental Commission on Transport Corridor Europe-Caucasus-Asia (TRACECA), Mr. Eduard Biryukov and Secretary General of the Organization for Economic Cooperation Mr. Shamil Aleskerov addressed the High-level International Conference.
