Talks between President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov and President Nicolae Timofti

President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov and President of the Republic of Moldova Nicolae Timofti, who had arrived in our country on an official visit, held talks in Ashgabat.

The official ceremony of greeting the distinguished guest took place on the Independence Square. The two leaders held the one-on-one talks and the talks, involving members of the government delegations of the two countries, at Ruhiyet Palace.

After the talks had concluded, the ceremony of signing bilateral documents took place. These include the memoranda of understanding on cooperation in the agro-industrial, education and transport sectors, the intergovernmental agreement on trade and economic cooperation, among others.

The two leaders gave a press conference.


The President of Turkmenistan said that the Ashgabat summit had cemented the foundations for more intense trade and economic cooperation between Turkmenistan and the Republic of Moldova. Our country is interested in cooperation with Moldova in the sectors, such as agriculture, processing industry, production of consumer goods, medicine and medical industry, furniture manufacturing, among others.

Turkmenistan stands ready to significantly increase exports of textile, chemical, oil and gas products. Focusing on the transport sector as a priority area for strategic cooperation, President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov said that Turkmenistan viewed the Republic of Moldova as its major partner in this area which had the profound potential. We view this country as a crucial transit transport link between Asia and Europe and the coastal regions of the Caspian and Black Seas.

The Turkmen leader emphasized that partnership in such strategic areas as the fuel and energy sector and the development of a new transport infrastructure on the continent provides ample opportunities. Cooperation in the transit and transport sector will bring an interstate dialogue between Turkmenistan and the Republic of Moldova to a qualitatively new level. These relations will be promoted as an essential and effective aspect of economic cooperation in the east-west direction on a long term and strategic basis. President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov went on to say that the sides agreed to actively cooperate in this sector within the specialized international organisations.


Noting that an obvious outcome of the Ashgabat talks was a solid package of bilateral documents, the President of the Republic of Moldova said that the sides had discussed a number of draft documents and agreed to sign them in the future. The Moldovan leader said that the talks focused on the issues relating to energy security and energy cooperation, Turkmenistan’s involvement in the gas projects which would be implemented in the Caspian Sea region.

Touching upon the issues relating to the Caspian gas pipeline project raised by President Nicolae Timofti, the Turkmen leader said that Turkmenistan took consistent measures to develop hydrocarbon resources and promote diversification of hydrocarbon exports to world markets. In this regard, President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov said that Turkmenistan exported natural gas to Russia and Iran via two gas pipelines and reached the agreement on additional 10 billion cubic metres and 25 billion cubic metres of ‘blue fuel’.

In conclusion, the Turkmen leader said that Turkmenistan attached great importance to the European vector. A high level dialogue between Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan and Turkey is underway in this regard.
