President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, who was on an official visit to the Republic of Austria, had a meeting with Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Yukiya Amano. The meeting took place at the residence of the President of Turkmenistan at the Imperial Hotel in Vienna.

Speaking about cooperation with the IAEA, President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov noted that Turkmenistan and the International Atomic Energy Agency signed the NPT Safeguards Agreement and the Additional Protocol in Vienna in 2005. The priority aspects of bilateral cooperation were discussed during the visit of the IAEA delegation to our country in January this year.

Taking the opportunity, President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov expressed sincere gratitude to the IAEA Board of Governors for accepting the application of the Government of Turkmenistan for the membership in this international organisation and recommending our country as a member of the IAEA for approval at the IAEA General Conference, which would be held in Vienna in September, 2015.

Underlining that this year Turkmenistan will celebrate the 20th anniversary of its permanent neutrality, the Turkmen leader invited the IAEA Director General to visit Turkmenistan and take part in the international high-level conference that will be held in Ashgabat in December.

. Expressing sincere gratitude for the invitation, Mr. Yukiya Amano underlined that all these years, the neutrality of Turkmenistan had been serving as an efficient mechanism for strengthening peace and maintaining the atmosphere of confidence and stability in the region. Thanking the President of Turkmenistan for the support provided to the bilateral cooperation, the IAEA Director General confirmed the IAEA’s willingness to continue close cooperation with our country. Having acceded to a number of important treaties, including the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty, the Central Asian Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone and other important documents, Turkmenistan consistently follows the undertaken commitments significantly contributing to strengthening the foundations of global peace and security and promoting disarmament processes.

In conclusion of the meeting, President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov and IAEA Director General Yukiya Amano expressed belief in the further successful development of fruitful bilateral cooperation that meets the goals of global well-being and progress.
