The celebrations in honour of the remarkable date of the national calendar – Constitution and Magtymguly’s Poetry Day took place throughout the country on May 18. It is not by chance that these two holidays merged together, symbolizing the continuing state and spiritual development of our nation in the modern epoch when the centuries-old dream of the Turkmen people of a sovereign state, glorified in the immortal poetry of the great Turkmen poet and humanist Magtymguly, has come true.
In the new historical epoch, the Constitution that embodies the immutable principles of the Turkmen state –independence and neutrality, peace and civil harmony, democracy and supremacy of law has determined the main vector for further development of our society – lofty spirituality and social and economic progress.
The main celebrations took place in Ashgabat at the Monument to the Constitution, which embodies the way of glorious victories and achievements. The green banners fluttered in the wind; fragrant flowers of all the colours of the rainbow enhanced festive mood and inspiration of the people, who had gathered together at the Monument to the Constitution on that day. The cabinet ministers, heads of the Mejlis, ministries and departments and the Ashgabat Hyakimlik, the elders, representatives of diplomatic missions accredited in Turkmenistan and public organisations and numerous citizens and guests of Ashgabat came there to take part in the celebrations.
After the ceremony of laying flowers to the Monument to the Constitution had concluded, the celebrations moved to the historical centre of the Turkmen capital – the Magtumguly Square where the sculpture of great Fraghi towers over the fountain.
This public garden is one of the most favourite and popular places in Ashgabat and the traditional venue for meeting of cultural workers and artists. It is there that writers and numerous poetry lovers gathered together to take part in the festivities dedicated to the great poet and thinker Magtymguly.
The creative work of Magtymguly has brought worldwide fame to Turkmen literature and become a significant contribution to the poetic treasury of mankind. The humanistic views of Magtymguly had a significant influence on the life of the Turkmen people and other peoples of the East in the 18th-19th centuries. It is natural that the personality of Magtymguly Fraghi continues to arouse interest of literary critics, art historians, writers and artists in many countries of the world.
The ceremony of laying flowers to the monuments of Magtymguly, musical and poetic performances and concerts in honour of the national holiday were held not only in the administrative centres of the regions of our country, but also in many foreign countries, as the name of Magtymguly is known today throughout the world and his immortal works are translated into different languages. His verses took a worthy place among the literary works of poets and philosophers of past epochs whose legacy belongs to the golden fund of world culture.
On that day many artists dedicated their performance to the genius of Turkmen poetry Magtymguly, whose literary legacy and the Constitution of Turkmenistan represent the values of our people.
