Talks between President of Turkmenistan and Prime Minister of Pakistan

President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov and Prime Minister of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan Muhammad Nawaz Sharif, who arrived in our country on an official visit, held the talks in Ashgabat.

The President of Turkmenistan and the Prime Minister of Pakistan held the one-on-one talks in the Blue Hall of the Oguzhan palace complex. The talks involving the members of the government delegations of the two countries took place in the Ak Pagta Hall.

President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov emphasized our country attached great importance to the diversification of the energy sector. Turkmenistan views Pakistan as a strategic partner on the implementation of ambitious international projects to promote energy transit from Turkmenistan to world markets. The Turkmen leader said that in this context the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India gas pipeline project laid the foundations for long-term bilateral partnership, noting with satisfaction that the successful steps were being taken to promote the important project. Large-scale work has been undertaken through joint efforts. A regional economic dialogue will reach a new level upon entering the final stage of the energy project.

Dwelling on the aspects of Turkmen-Pakistani cooperation, President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov emphasized the role of the ports of Turkmenbashi and Gwadar in shaping international trade corridors. The Turkmen leader expressed belief that the projects would open up new opportunities for transport flows along the Asia-Europe routes.

The implementation of joint projects in the key areas of cooperation, such as agriculture and textile, light and processing industries, is deemed beneficial to the two countries. The Turkmen leader also emphasized the important role of the Turkmenistan-Pakistan Intergovernmental Commission.

Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers of Turkmenistan B. Hojamuhammedov reported on the measures taken to implement the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India gas pipeline project. The projects and the information on the route of the transnational gas pipeline were presented.

Reporting on the amounts of energy currently supplied from Turkmenistan to Afghanistan, Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers B. Artykov said that steady growth of the energy potential enabled our country to increase electricity exports to neighbouring countries.

The Prime Minister of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan expressed support for the proposals of President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov on cooperation and exchange of experience in the sports sector.

Underlining the keen interest of Pakistan in cooperation in the energy sector, including on electricity and gas supplies, as called forth by the domestic energy needs, Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif emphasized the importance of the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India gas pipeline project.

Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif underscored the significance of the projects of the railway corridors Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Tajikistan and Kazakhstan-Turkmenistan-Iran initiated by Turkmenistan, bringing profound progress to the entire region. They will also create favourable conditions for Pakistan that has no direct transport corridor to Turkmenistan today.

The distinguished guest said that Pakistan fully supported the Turkmen leader’s initiatives for the peaceful settlement of the situation in Afghanistan through negotiations and diplomatic means.

After the government talks had concluded, the ceremony of signing bilateral documents took place in the Marble Hall in the presence of the President of Turkmenistan and the Prime Minister of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan.

The Memorandum of Understanding between the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Turkmenistan and the Trade Development Authority of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan and the Agreement on the Turkmenistan-Pakistan Intergovernmental Commission on Economic Cooperation between the Government of Turkmenistan and the Government of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan were signed.

President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov and Prime Minister of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan Muhammad Nawaz Sharif put their signatures to the Joint Communique.

In the evening, President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov gave an official dinner in honour of the distinguished guest, at which the Turkmen leader and the head of the Government of Pakistan exchanged speeches.

Prime Minister of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan Muhammad Nawaz Sharif continues his official visit to Turkmenistan.
