President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov was a guest of honour at the official opening ceremony of the Baku-2015 European Games. Together with other distinguished guests, including heads of state and government, well-known statesmen and public and political figures, heads of international sports organisations, the Turkmen leader Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov attended the opening ceremony of the Baku-2015 European Games, held at the Olympic Stadium in Baku.
The audience of the ceremony included thousands of Turkmen spectators. The national sports channel television started broadcasting the European Games, in which a group of volunteers from our country is taking part. Over 6,000 athletes from 49 countries are participating in the sports competitions, which will be held from 12 to 28 June. Athletes will compete for 253 sets of medals in 20 events, of which 12 events are included in the programme of the 2016 Olympic Games: boxing, wrestling, cycling, volleyball, judo, athletics, table tennis, swimming, shooting, archery, triathlon and taekwondo.
The invitation of the President of Turkmenistan to attend the opening ceremony of the European Games is of particular significance for the development of international cooperation of our country in the field of sport. A new page in this cooperation will be the V Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games, which will be taking place in Ashgabat in 2017.
Turkmenistan will host the competitions of this status for the first time. Therefore, best international practices in organisation of such mutli-sport events are studied extensively in preparation for the V Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games. Construction work on the Olympic Village, which occupies a huge area in the south of the capital of Turkmenistan, is in full swing. It will cover a total area of 157 hectares, on which over 30 sports facilities will spring up. The Olympic Village project has the US$ 5 billion budget.
During the working visit to the Republic of Azerbaijan, the Turkmen leader held bilateral meetings with President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev and President of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who arrived in Baku to attend the opening ceremony of the European Games.
