The Turkmen-Georgian top-level talks took place in Tbilisi during the state visit of President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov to Georgia.

The leaders of Turkmenistan and Georgia held the one-on-one talks at the Presidential Palace in Tbilisi. The Turkmen leader thanked his Georgian counterpart for supporting the initiatives put forward by our country to build up international cooperation in the energy, transport and communications and humanitarian sectors. As is known, Georgia is a co-sponsor of the relevant resolutions of the United Nations General Assembly and the Resolution on Permanent Neutrality of Turkmenistan, adopted at the 69th session of the UN General Assembly on June 3, 2015. In this context, President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov called for further intensification of cooperation between Turkmenistan and Georgia within the United Nations.

Noting that Ashgabat would host the International Conference on the Policy of Neutrality: International Cooperation for Peace, Security and Development in December, the Turkmen leader expressed special gratitude to the President of Georgia for confirming the participation of the high-level delegation of his country in the forum.

The sides exchanged views on topical issues of regional and international importance. The two leaders discussed the progress in implementing bilateral agreements and specified the vectors of further cooperation.

Emphasis was placed on the energy, transport and communications sectors as key areas for partnership, including cooperation in developing transport corridors, given the capacity of the Caspian and Black Sea regions as well as the favourable geographical location of Turkmenistan and Georgia.

Ashgabat hosted the quadripartite meeting on energy cooperation involving representatives of Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan, Turkey and the European Union in May this year. The meeting provided a platform for adopting an agreed position on Georgia’s proposal to participate in the projects aimed at developing pipeline infrastructure to ensure stable transit of energy from the Caspian region westwards.

In this context, the leaders of the two countries emphasized that Turkmenistan and Georgia stood against any attempt to politicize on-going partnership in the energy sector. The sides, guided by national economic interests when addressing this issue, agreed to promote cooperation and work together with all interested partners in this sector.

The sides considered the possibility to expand contacts between business structures and facilitate cooperation between cultural and art workers of Turkmenistan and Georgia. Emphasis was placed on the importance of partnership between high educational institutions of the two countries in the spheres of science and education as well as health care, sports and tourism.

After the talks had concluded, the ceremony of signing bilateral documents took place.

The Memorandum on Cooperation between the Academy of Sciences of Turkmenistan and the Georgian National Academy of Sciences, the Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation in the exchange of financial information related to the legalization of proceeds from crime and terrorist financing between the Ministry of Finance of Turkmenistan and the Financial Monitoring Service of Georgia, the Memorandum of Understanding on Sports between the State Committee for Sports of Turkmenistan and the Ministry of Sport and Youth Affairs of Georgia, the Memorandum of Cooperation on Education between the Ministry of Education of Turkmenistan and the Ministry of Education and Science of Georgia, the Agreement on Cooperation on Culture and Art between the Government of Turkmenistan and the Government of Georgia and the Agreement on the Intergovernmental Turkmenistan-Georgia Commission on economic cooperation between the Government of Turkmenistan and the Government of Georgia were signed.
