An official visit of President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov to Afghanistan started on August 27.

Turkmenistan and Afghanistan attach particular attention to the top-level bilateral meeting that will become another important step towards widening and enhancing interstate cooperation.

During the state visit of President of Islamic Republic of Afghanistan Mohammad Ashraf Ghani to Turkmenistan on January 21, President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov underlined that while implementing the foreign-policy strategy of Turkmenistan, our country had paid significant attention to strengthening fruitful relations with neighbouring states, including Afghanistan.

Following these good traditions, Turkmenistan provides comprehensive assistance to the neighbouring state in its social, economic and cultural revival. Supporting the people of Afghanistan in their aspiration for peaceful and prosperous life, our country supplies electric power and liquefied gas to Afghanistan at preferential price, builds social, in particular medical and educational institutions in the neighbouring country and provides assistance to the youth in Afghanistan in getting education.

President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov believes that the settlement of the situation in the fraternal neighbouring state is possible only through peaceful, political and diplomatic means based on the wide national dialogue. Peacekeeping potential of the international community, first of all, under the auspices of the United Nations, should be involved more actively and widely in Afghanistan. In this context, Turkmenistan is ready to provide all necessary assistance to the United Nations in this area and the UN Regional Centre for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia should play an important role in this issue.

Turkmenistan stands for the provision of active international support to the Government of Afghanistan to ensure the effective integration of the country into the regional and international economic processes taking concrete steps to restore the Afghan economy and social infrastructure. That is vividly proved by the creative initiative put forward by Turkmenistan during the sessions of the UN General Assembly and other major international forums, as well large-scale projects such as the construction of the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India (TAPI) gas pipeline initiated by the Turkmen side. Implementation of this transnational energy project will significantly contribute to creation of the modern architecture of the global energy security, and at the same time, will directly contribute to solving urgent social problems in neighboring Afghanistan, in particular, the creation of new jobs.

In this aspect, cooperation in the spheres of transport and communications plays no less important role. That is vividly exemplified by the construction of the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Tajikistan railway launched in 2013. In prospect, the steel main line has all prerequisites to become an important link of the transit and transport routes at the regional and international level promoting the active integration of the countries participating in this project in the modern global economic system.

The agenda of the regular bilateral top-level talks, on the outcomes of which it is planned to sign a package of important documents, will include the priority issues of the interstate cooperation in the context of implementation of the earlier achieved agreements and plans for the future. Thus, the current official visit of the President of Turkmenistan to the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, of course, will offer a new impetus to the further progressive development of the dialogue between Turkmenistan and Afghanistan, which is bonded with unbreakable ties of friendship and good neighborliness.
