The State News Agency of Turkmenistan reports that the Association of National Olympic Committees Award was presented to President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov for his outstanding role in promoting the sports movement. President of the Association of National Olympic Committees Sheikh Ahmad Al-Fahad Al-Sabah presented the ANOC Award to the leader of Turkmenistan at the 34th OCA General Assembly.
Thanking for the great honour, the Turkmen leader Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov said that he regarded the award as the international recognition of Turkmenistan’s policy for promoting physical culture and sport which underlies the large scale work being done in the country.
The General Assembly of the Olympic Council of Asia, held in the capital of Turkmenistan, focused on the preparations for the V Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games, which will be held in Ashgabat in 2017.
The venue for the OCA General Assembly was the newly built Martial Arts Centre in the Ashgabat Olympic Village. President of the Olympic Council of Asia and the Association of National Olympic Committees Sheikh Ahmad Al-Fahad Al-Sabah and President of the Oceania National Olympic Committees Robin Mitchell arrived in Ashgabat to participate in the forum. The NOC Presidents from 62 countries attended the OCA General Assembly.
Together with the National Olympic Committees of Asian and Oceanian countries, the international federations of the sports, included in the V Asian Games programme, including cycling, swimming, belt wrestling, freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling, track and field athletics, kickboxing, show jumping, basketball, tennis and chess, among others, were represented at the 34th OCA General Assembly. Over 600 participants also included representatives of the International Olympic Committee and the Organizing Committees of the Asian Games in the Republic of Korea, Japan, Indonesia, the 2015 European Games in Azerbaijan and the 2016 Summer Olympic Games in Brazil.
Addressing the OCA General Assembly, President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov noted that the forum was taking place at the Olympic Village, being built specially for the V Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games, which Ashgabat will be hosting in 2017.
The US$ 5 billion Olympic Village comprises a total of 30 sports, social, cultural and housing facilities, covering an area of 157 hectares. The ambitious project is to be implemented in three phrases. The Turkmen leader invited the participants in the 34th OCA General Assembly to visit these facilities, assuring that all their comments and suggestions would be taken into consideration.
The first phase has been completed; construction work in the second phase is now 90 per cent complete and that in the third phase – 40 per cent complete. Facilities in the second phase are expected to be built and put into operation in December this year, and those in the third phase – in March 2017.
The Turkmen leader said that Turkmenistan was committed to the humanistic ideals, values and traditions of the Olympic movement. Promoting sport and physical activity is a key priority of the state policy, in particular the large-scale targeted projects, such as the National Programme for the promotion of sport and physical activity for 2011-2020 and the National Programme for the promotion of sport and the training of professional athletes for 2012-2016.
The President of Turkmenistan noted that the 34th General Assembly was some kind of prologue to the large scale international festival of sport, which will take place in our capital in two years. The programme of the V Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games includes 21 sports, namely track and field athletics, swimming, basketball, futsal, tennis, cycling, sport wrestling, chess, sport dance, weightlifting (powerlifting), kickboxing, Thai boxing, sambo, kurash, belt wrestling, jiu-jitsu, taekwondo ( WTF), bowling, billiards, Turkmen national wrestling goresh and show jumping (equestrian).

The Executive Board meeting of the Olympic Council of Asia was held at the newly built Olimpiya Hotel in the Ashgabat Olympic Village.
