In Turkmenistan, October 6 is observed as Memorial Day. This is a day to commemorate the heroes who perished on the battlefields and victims of the 1948 devastating earthquake in Ashgabat. President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov attended the commemorative ceremony of laying flowers to the monuments at the Halk Hakydasy memorial complex.

Early in the morning, thousands of citizens and guests of Ashgabat came to the monuments at the Halk Hakydasy memorial complex, built in honour of national heroes who died on the battlefields of the Geoktepe Battle and the 1941-1945 War and sacrificed their lives in other battles and victims of the Ashgabat earthquake. The colossal force razed Ashgabat and its suburbs on the night of October 5-6, 1948, at 1 hour 12 minutes and cut short the lives of thousands of our compatriots in overnight.

In mournful silence the Turkmen leader Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov headed to the majestic Ruhy Tagzym monument to pay tribute to all those who died in the 1948 earthquake. At that moment a sense of sincere empathy embraced all those gathered in the square, who shared the grief of the leader of the Turkmen state, who had lost his grandfather Berdymuhamed Annaev – a veteran of the 1941-1945 War, a teacher and educator who devoted himself to the education of the younger generation, on that tragic night.

Having gone through severe hardships, the people revived beloved Ashgabat. Nowadays they continue to transform it into a beautiful city of the world, a capital of peace, cohesion, happiness and prosperity.

The Turkmen leader laid the wreaths of wonderful autumn flowers to the Milletin Ogullary Monument which serves a symbol of the undying memory of the valiant sons of the Turkmen land.

On Memorial Day, the Turkmen people grieve over their heroes, bowing the heads before their courage. They grieve over old people, women and children from the Geoktepe fortress who, without a moment’s thought of danger, together with the courageous defenders offered strong resistance to a superior enemy, and all innocent victims who shed their blood for the native land. They died but remained undefeated for their immense love of the homeland.

Remembering the milestones of the heroic history, the Turkmen people perform the filial duty to their valiant ancestors, passing the memory of courage of the legendary defenders of the Geoktepe fortress from one generation to another.

The young generation of our country has someone to follow the example of. The glory of their brave ancestors who defended freedom and independence of the Motherland is inscribed in golden letters in the history of the Turkmen nation. Thousands of our compatriots displayed unparalleled fortitude, fidelity to military duty, selfless love for the native land on all the fronts of the 1941-1945 war.

The President of Turkmenistan laid a wreath at the Baky Sohrat monument, built in honour of Turkmen soldiers who fell in the battle against fascism and the heroes who sacrificed their lives for the freedom of the Motherland. Among them is the grandfather of the Turkmen leader Berdymuhamed Annaev, whose life sets an example of true patriotism and fidelity to the duty for Turkmen youth to follow.

…Following the leader of Turkmenistan, the heads of Mejlis, cabinet ministers, hyakims of the regions and Ashgabat, high-ranking officials of military and law enforcement agencies, ministries and departments, heads of diplomatic missions accredited to Turkmenistan, representatives of public organisations, foreign companies, the elders, students, citizens and guests of the Turkmen capital laid their flowers to the monument.

After the flower laying ceremony had concluded, President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov and all ceremony participants headed to the special building where the ritual meal sadaqah was held.

The state flags with mourning ribbons were lowered throughout the country; the memorial ceremonies and sadaqahs were held in the capital city and all the regions of Turkmenistan on that day.
