QUESTION: What is the main aim of the esteemed Prime Minister’s present visit to Turkmenistan?

ANSWER: I am so glad to have an opportunity first-ever in the history as Prime Minister of Japan to pay a visit to Turkmenistan the year when Turkmenistan is celebrating the 20th anniversary of its permanent neutrality.

Last year, I had an opportunity to meet twice with President Gurbanguly Berdymuhamedov: during his visit to Japan in 2013, and in the course of his visit in the framework of the United Nations Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction in this year’s March. During those meetings, I received an invitation from the President to pay a visit to Turkmenistan. I am so glad to take advantage of the invitation of the President to visit Turkmenistan and have the third meeting with the President.

Over recent time, due to the President Gurbanguly Berdymuhamedov’s efficient leadership, the relations between our countries keep advancing rapidly, and active interaction is ongoing not only at the level of heads of states, but also at the high governmental level. In the frames of the present visit, I arrived in your country accompanied by representatives of 31 Japanese companies. We are planning to sign plenty of resulting documents including business documents on the private companies’ projects, and are expecting to obtain impressive results not only in the natural gas sphere, but also in many other ones.

I hope that due to my visit, along with the economic sector, new horizons of cooperation will open in such fields, as diplomatic cooperation, culture, sports, youth exchanges, etc.

QUESTION: How do you assess the current state and prospects of the bilateral relations between Turkmenistan and Japan?

ANSWER: The relations between Japan and Turkmenistan are actively developing thanks to the strong guidance of President Gurbanguly Berdymuhamedov, who has already visited Japan three times. After several meetings with the President, I became convinced that your country is a reliable partner, and in the course of the visit I am going to discuss with the President different areas of cooperation to broaden the spectrum of bilateral relations.

In the framework of cooperation, Japan attaches great importance to each individual person. An opportunity for every person to obtain self-reliance, develop their talents and make contribution to the life of society is a key condition of the country’s sustainable growth. Relying on such an approach, Japan intends to render support, including encouragement of Turkmenistan’s efforts, in training the qualified industrial personnel with the use of the Japan’s engineering education system.

As for the foreign policy sphere, Turkmenistan, as a country presiding in 2015-2016 over the “Central Asia + Japan” Dialogue, is making great contribution to strengthening the relations between the countries of Central Asia and Japan. Japan and Turkmenistan have a shared point of view on a wide range of issues and are cooperating within the United Nations and other multilateral formats.

However, the relations between Japan and Turkmenistan have the great yet untapped potential. I intend not to stop at what has already been achieved, and in association with the President to deepen our relations of cooperation and partnership.
