President of Turkmenistan receives UNICEF Turkmenistan Representative

President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov received the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) Turkmenistan Representative Oyunsaikhan Dendevnorov.

The President of Turkmenistan and the UNICEF Turkmenistan Representative exchanged views on the progress made and the prospects for building up long-term partnership that had been filled with qualitatively new content in recent years. Particular attention was paid to the progress in implementing the joint programmes and projects with the United Nations Children’s Fund, in particular the National Maternal, Newborn, Child and Adolescent Health Strategy and Action Plan for 2015-2019.

Highly evaluating the substantial achievements of our country in this field, Ms. Oyunsaikhan Dendevnorov emphasized that they clearly evidenced the social orientation of the state policy.

The development of the special national programme for the implementation of the recommendations of the International Child Development Centre was a focus of discussion.

The guest noted with satisfaction the large-scale work being done to improve the quality in early childhood education and build kindergartens and schools equipped with the latest technologies not only throughout the country, but also in neighbouring Afghanistan the Turkmen side had initiated the construction of a maternity hospital and a children’s recreation centre.

President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov expressed special gratitude to the UNICEF Turkmenistan Representative for the support provided by the organisation in the field of maternal and child health care as well as the assistance for implementing large-scale national projects, including those implemented as part of collaboration with the World Health Organization on food fortification, salt iodization and childhood immunization coverage for that Turkmenistan has the highest rates in the Central Asian region. It was emphasized that relying on the long-term positive experience of working together, Turkmenistan would continue to closely cooperate with the major international organisations in the UN system, including UNICEF, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), the World Health Organization, among others.

The sides were unanimous that the concrete proposals put forward by independent neutral Turkmenistan at the United Nations Sustainable Development Summit, held in September this year in the framework of the 70th anniversary session of the United Nations General Assembly, opened up vast fields of further joint activities. Addressing the global forum, President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov highlighted quality education, healthy lifestyles, gender equality and nutrition as the key sustainable development goals for the future.
