The ground-breaking ceremony of the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India (TAPI) gas pipeline and infrastructure facilities at the third development stage of the Galkynysh gas field that will be the resource base for the new energy route in the early stage took place in Mary Velayat. President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, President of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan Mohammad Ashraf Ghani, Prime Minister of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan Muhammad Nawaz Sharif and Vice President of India Mohammad Hamid Ansari, who arrived in our country a day before, attended the ceremony.
The TAPI gas pipeline project is implemented in accordance with the intergovernmental agreements between the four states. The TAPI gas pipeline has the length of about 1,814 kilometres. Of them, 214 kilometres are to be laid on the territory of our country. The pipeline route will run across the cities of Herat and Kandahar in Afghanistan and the cities of Quetta and Multan in Pakistan to Fazilka village in India. The gas pipeline has an annual capacity to supply 33 billion cubic metres. The pipeline, including ground-based infrastructure, is to be put into operation in December 2019.
Turkmengaz State Concern is to coordinate financial management and operation of the transnational gas pipeline. Turkmengaz State Concern that has over 50 years of experience in natural gas production and transportation and pipeline construction was unanimously elected the leader of the TAPI Pipeline Company Limited joint stock company.
The gas pipeline will create about 12,000 new jobs. Congratulating all those present on the start of construction work on the TAPI gas pipeline and expressing best wishes for progress and prosperity to the peoples in the participating countries, the President of Turkmenistan said that the TAPI gas pipeline would contribute to strengthening friendly relations as well as political and economic partnership between the countries.
President of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan Mohammad Ashraf Ghani underscored the historic significance of the event. The leader of Afghanistan said that the project implementation would promote social and economic development of Turkmenistan, Afghanistan, Pakistan and India, where new cities and settlements and thousands of new jobs would be created.
Addressing the President of Turkmenistan, the President of Afghanistan and the Prime Minister of Pakistan, Vice President of India Muhammad Nawaz Sharif expressed gratitude for the possibility of the event and the valuable and timely initiative for the benefit of all the peoples of the region – the start of construction work on the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India gas pipeline.
The distinguished guest focused on the correctness and appropriateness of the choice of location to launch this ambitious project as a key element of the future gas pipeline. There is a deep sense in the launching of the large-scale initiative on the territory of Mary, located along the Great Silk Road. The Vice President of India emphasized that the launch of the TAPI project was the first step towards creating a single economic network stretching from the Caspian Sea to the coast of India.
Prime Minister of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan Muhammad Nawaz Sharif expressed sincere gratitude to President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov for the high interest in the earliest implementation of the TAPI gas pipeline project that would not only bring together the Central Asian countries in economic terms, but also pave the way for broader cooperation as well as meet the needs of Pakistan in natural gas.
The President of Turkmenistan, the President of Afghanistan, the Prime Minister of Pakistan and the Vice President of India signed their message to future generations that was put it in the special capsule and sunk into the foundation, and threw the first shovel of concrete into the foundation pit, thus starting construction work.
The first joint – a symbolic ‘golden link’ of the new gas transportation artery – was welded.
