The opening ceremony of the East-West gas pipeline that circles the largest gas fields of Turkmenistan into the gas transportation system took place in Belek in Balkan Velayat.

During the opening ceremony, President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov turned the valve of the East-West gas pipeline, letting the first cubic metres of natural gas stream in. The Turkmen leader put his signature to the pipeline in commemoration of the remarkable event.

The new gas pipeline that has the length of 733 kilometres and the capacity to supply 30 billion cubic metres per year stretches from the Shatlyk gas compressor station in Mary Velayat to the Belek gas compressor station in the Caspian Sea region.

The importance of the East-West gas pipeline goes beyond national boundaries; this project is designed to encourage international energy cooperation, considering that new regions and areas will join the boundaries of exports of Turkmen hydrocarbons in the future. The pipeline will allow transporting significant amounts of gas from the largest gas fields of the country to export points in existing and prospective directions.

Hydrocarbon-rich Turkmenistan is actively working towards diversifying hydrocarbon exports to foreign markets. In recent years, the transnational gas pipeline to China has been built. The project of the second pipeline to Iran was successfully implemented. The construction work on Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India gas pipeline was launched in Mary Velayat on December 13.
