President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov and Emir of the State of Qatar Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al-Thani, who arrived in Ashgabat for his first official visit, will hold talks in Ashgabat on March 7.

Turkmen-Qatari top-level talks illustrate the mutual intention and willingness of the two countries to develop cooperation based on equality and mutual respect on a long term basis.

Speaking at the 4 March meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers, the Turkmen leader underlined the importance of the upcoming bilateral talks in Ashgabat and noted with satisfaction the invariably friendly character of Turkmen-Qatari relations as well as the potential to expand mutually beneficial trade and economic cooperation and strengthen humanitarian contacts based on historical, cultural and spiritual affinities between the peoples of the two countries. The practice of long-term partnership: Turkmenistan and the State of Qatar established diplomatic relations in 1996, testifies to mutual goodwill to bring the traditional intergovernmental dialogue to a qualitatively new level, which meets the interests and potential of the two states.

The first official visit of President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov to the State of Qatar in October 2010, when the large package of documents aimed at deepening mutually beneficial cooperation in various fields, particularly in the trade and economic sectors, was signed, gave special impetus to Turkmen-Qatari relations to develop.

In this context, great importance is attached to the Intergovernmental Turkmenistan-Qatar Commission for trade and economic cooperation established on the initiative of the leader of Turkmenistan that held its first meeting in Ashgabat in January 2013.

The priority and most promising areas of cooperation include trade, transport and communications, high technology, finance and investment, education, tourism, sports and construction, particularly construction of sports facilities, where Qatar has accumulated sufficient expertise.

Our countries that rank among the recognized energy powers and the leading exporters of natural gas are seeking to diversify partnership in this field as well.

The projects of international importance designed to develop an extensive network of transport corridors initiated by the Turkmen leader are aimed at strengthening and promoting mutually beneficial trade and economic relations given the new realities and modern requirements. In particular, these include the transcontinental North-South railway that is to serve as some kind of bridge between Europe and Asia as well as open up new opportunities for cooperation with the countries of the Middle East, including Qatar.
