On March 17, it was the final day of the official visit of President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov to the Islamic Republic of Pakistan.

The important area of intensified cooperation at the meetings in Islamabad was transportation and communication spheres.

On March 16-17, consultative talks of representatives of State Service of Maritime and River Transportation of Turkmenistan with heads of Ministry of Ports and Shipping, and Ministry of Communication of Pakistan, were held. The meeting is about the opportunities of the ports Karachi, Kasim, Gwadar to link transit resources of our country to the track- East-West to provide our country with the access to the ports on the ocean coast along with the vast South-East Asian markets.

During the meeting between President of Turkmenistan and Prime Minister of Pakistan, there was a presentation of perspective projects aimed at creating transport and communication networks between Pakistan and Central Asian countries, in which Turkmenistan would play an important role due to its convenient geographical location and the country’s efforts in building logistics hubs for transit and transportation links for the entire Eurasian continent.

In this regard, it was considered the key areas for expansion of current transportation system with regards to building new highways, motor roads to access Pakistan’s ports on the Indian Ocean coast, and establish new trade routes from the Asian regions through Middle East to Europe.

For this purpose, the Pakistan side is planning four routes that will connect Pakistan’s Karachi and Gwadar ports to Central Asian countries. Two of the proposed routes will be ground routes connecting Pakistan and Turkmenistan.

Of special interest are projects to build a high-speed highway and, in the future, a railway road, which fall along Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India gas pipeline as the largest gas transportation system, which serves as a backbone rout beneficial to the entire region. This project is also beneficial for Pakistan particularly with regards to its economic outlook. Pakistan’s rapid industrial growth stipulates increase of energy resource consumptions to ensure reliable and uninterrupted inflow.

In this regard, the port Gwadar opened in 2007 on the Arabian seacoast, nearby Persian Gulf, the location of which is on the crossroads of the most important regions, abundant with oil and gas of Middle East, Central Asia and the consumer markets of South Asia and China, which allows ensuring freight traffic from Asia to Europe.

As far as the interest of our country, the port Gwadar introduces the best access to the markets of South-East Asia. This is about new opportunities of the export of mineral, agricultural and other goods which consider transportation throughout the Pakistan’s territory.

Moreover, development of cooperation between Turkmenistan and Pakistan will provide positive support in wide spectrum of Afghan problems, intended to contribute further to strengthening peace and stability in this country, with efforts to combat religious extremism, and international terrorism, illicit arm and drug trafficking. An illustrative example of the strategic project is the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India (TAPI) gas pipeline.
