People of Turkmenistan celebrated the National Spring Holiday, the International Day of Nowruz with colourful festivities

The colourful folklore and ethnographic performances, theatrical performances based on ancient rituals, bright folk costumes, music, songs and dances that had come to us from the depth of the centuries underlined the deep symbolism of this ancient holiday in honour of the spring awakening of nature and the renewal of life.


A Turkmen village with all its attributes, including yurts and trestle beds covered with carpets, the yards with domestic animals and cauldrons with delicious food blended well with the bazaar, its colourful trading pavilions, lively salesmen and artists exhilarating people.

Among the guests to the celebrations were Deputy Chairmen of the Cabinet of Ministers, heads of Mejlis, ministries and departments, heads of diplomatic missions and international organizations accredited in our country, the delegations from dozens of countries, including representatives of administrative structures, business circles, mass media and workers of culture and art from Azerbaijan, Afghanistan, Iran, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Turkey, Gagauzia, the Republic of Moldova.


The guests were greeted with a stirring dancing composition performed by the Serpay folklore group of the Ministry of Energy of Turkmenistan and Galkynysh folklore group of the cultural and business centre of the oil and gas complex of Turkmenistan.

The floor was given to Chairperson of the Mejlis of Turkmenistan A. Nurberdiyeva, who informed those present that the monument Friendship erected in honour of the National Spring Holiday – the International Day of Nowruz would be opened within the framework of the festivities.


Then under the storm of applause of those present, the ceremony of opening the monument took place. The main attribute of the holiday – a big golden bowl with green wheat sprouts appeared before the ceremony participants.

The commemorative inscription on the postament testifies to that the President of Turkmenistan signed the Resolution on designating the venue for festive events on the occasion of National Spring Holiday in Ak Bugday Etrap, Ahal Velayat as Nowruz ýaýlasy.


The Guests of Honour passed through the main entrance to Nowruz ýaýlasy, where children greeted them with funny poems and songs.

Ahal Velayat began the parade of festive performances with the ethnographic musical show, including folk musical and ritual performances, exhibitions of decorative and applied arts, the storyline of which was the moments of preparations for the holiday of Nowruz and the celebrations as well as some working processes of our ancestors.


Dashoguz Velayat greeted guests with national dishes.

A group of women demonstrated different stages of grain processing: crushing grain in a mortar, grinding grain and milling it into flour on stone graters. Another group of women bolted flour repeating the ritual recitations about Nowruz. Others rolled dough for chorek, pishme, noodles, etc.


Theatre and amateur artists greeted the spectators and presented the sketches with rituals, which are specific to the northern region of the country.

Artists from Lebap Velayat presented the brightest features of the traditions and celebrations of Nowruz. In their compositions, they demonstrated various centuries-old customs, which were specific to the traditional way of life of the Turkmen people.


Dashing Turkmen dzhigits riding magnificent horses demonstrated the inimitable sportsmanship and brilliant techniques and presented the truly folk performance of fascinating beauty and prowess with distinctive flavour and spectacular splendour that produced a lasting impression on participants in the festivities.

The performance dedicated to crafts was presented by artists from Balkan Velayat.


The guests could see jewellers creating their products in the past, potters creating pots, dishes and other vessels from special clay, woodcarvers working on the work pieces, which turn into beautiful high-quality household items under their skillful hands.

The programme of the national games prepared together by the folklore groups and artistic groups of the Turkmen State Institute of Culture and the State Committee of Turkmenistan for Sports, Ashgabat Khyakimlik and cultural institutions.


The puppet show performance was arranged for the youngest guests to the holiday. Actors performed right among many viewers and, thus, recreated the environment and atmosphere of marketplaces in medieval cities, where strolling actors performed.

The Cattle Breeding section represented the diversity of the ancient traditions of Turkmen cattle breeders. Mary Velayat folklore groups arranged their colourful performances demonstrating the decorative and applied arts of their region in the exposition.


Guests were impressed with the process of creating yurts - the most practical and convenient housing for people who, because of their activities in the past were forced to wander: shepherds, hunters, and others. The guests also had an opportunity to learn more about famous Saradja sheep breed kept in folds. Camels in wedding caravan with a bride in a palanquin proudly paced out nearby. Here and there briskly scurrying graceful greyhounds basins. Strong alabai – guard dogs that were grazing on spring meadows nearby contributed to the atmosphere of the traditional Turkmen village of farmers and charvadar.


Among many foreign visitors to the festivity were TV journalists and reporters, as well as more than 160 representatives of foreign tourist companies, special guests invited to make a big tour around our country. Travel agents from the United States, Canada, Australia, Spain, Switzerland, UK, the Netherlands, Russia, Austria, France, Czech Republic, Bulgaria, Latvia and other countries will travel along the routes revealing Turkmenistan as a region with a rich historical heritage, beautiful nature and unique culture. special guests on the large information and a tour of Turkmenistan,

Guests were invited to enjoy the unfading dance kushtdepdi, which once again conquered all those present with the magic of gestures and energy of movements.

Masters of culture and art of our country as well as foreign artists performed a big concert, which programme included literary, musical, folklore and ethnographic compositions, dances, lyrical folk songs and modern compositions.



The festivities finished with the ritual of jumping over a giant fire, which symbolizes spiritual self-perfecting as well as the cycle of life and the sun, giving life and light.

Festive concerts and cultural events were arranged in all administrative centres in the regions of the country and the Turkmen capital.
