War has caught junior sergeant Kurban Durdy from Sakarchage etrap of Mary velayat on border, and he has taken part at the first battle with fascists on Romanian-Bessarabian border already on June 22, 1941. On July 27, 1941 the commander of the rifle squad has shown courage and heroism in fight for height that had strategic importance. Shell burst has torn off his hand, but despite this wound, he led his squad to the attack. Kurban Durdy was the first Turkmen who was awarded the title the Hero of the Soviet Union. Having returned in 1942 to Ashgabat after demobilization, he has graduated from the Pedagogical Institute and worked as the teacher of history, and then the director of the History Museum of the Academy of Sciences of Turkmenistan.

The feat of 28 heroes-panfilovits was repeated by the representative of the 97th Turkmen cavalry division, 294th cavalry regiment squadron commander lieutenant Annaklych Atayev who managed the school in Tahta settlement of Dashoguz velayat before war. He died in January 1943, keeping with squadron the height in White Kalitva village of the Rostov region, and was posthumously awarded the rank of the Hero of the Soviet Union. This height was later named “The immortality height”. There has been a monument erected on this place, which is a place of worship to a great feat of winners.

One week before the end of war - on April, 26th, 1945 - the teacher from Tejen - Muhammet Atayev has heroically died in the German city of Cottbus. In persistent fight with fascists, the commander of the tank has burnt with the crew, but didn’t surrender to the enemy.
On April 6th, 1943, having changed a civil suit to the military form, the director of high school №6 of the “Kyzyl cherve” collective farm of the Kirov area of Ashgabat region (at present, “Taze yol” village, Babadayhan etrap, Ahal velayat) Berdymuhamed Annayev - the grandfather of the President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, has voluntarily left to the front. Corporal of the 748th shooting regiment of the 2nd Ukrainian front has courageously and selflessly battled against the enemy. In one of fights, during enemy bombardment, he got a missile wound. In October, 1944 he returned back as the school director and supervised it until leaving to the front. Children whose fathers and elder brothers were at the front, accepted him as a close one, needed his kind word. Coming to the class and looking into the eyes of pupils, the teacher narrated pupils about feats of fighters and commanders at the front, inspiring boys the confidence that the victory will necessarily come and their fathers will come back to native hearths.

In the first year of war by the district military registration and enlistment office summons teachers B.P.Yefimov, Akber Guseyinov, military instructor A.M.Doronov were sent to the front. In 1942 the teacher of German language V.F.Konrad, and in 1943 – acting school principal I.G.Ignatenko.
Not only on battlefields, but also in deep rear, teacher served as an example of courage and patriotism. There was a lack of hands in the country. The men who left to the front were replaced by women and teenagers on fields and at machine tools. On the basis of the special Resolution of the SNK ТSSR in April, 1942 under the direction of teachers there were created brigades in countryside for participation in agricultural works. Together with pupils, they studied bases of cotton growing, silkworm breeding and truck farming, cattle rewriting, worked on community and Sunday works. At schools teachers organized for pupils hot breakfasts, distributed grain cards.
After lessons teachers at school conducted lessons with recruits, training them reading and writing. Courses on preparation of teachers from schoolgirls of the senior classes have been created. And at nights teachers checked copy-books and wrote summaries for the next day.
In days of war after hospitals, there were about 40 hospitals in Turkmenistan, many fighters and commanders recovered in medical-rehabilitation centre, which was created in the city of Yoloten. Schoolboys rendered them patronage help: cleaned chambers, prepared fire wood, wrote for fighters letter to their homes and dears, gave concerts, collected in sands turtles and their eggs for improvement of food of wounded. And everyone was proud of feasible contribution to a victory over the enemy.
If health and education allowed fighters, they helped school and replaced teachers who have left to the front. One of them - an order bearer, the hero of battle on the Kursk arch Vasiliy Andreevich Smesov. Being on treatment after wound, he has met his destiny in Yoloten, married and on a state of health remained to work at school as №2 as a teacher of chemistry and biology. The eyewitness of many events, he, as no one else, could teach the pupils severe truth of war, bring up them on examples of courage and heroism.
Just like all Turkmen people, the teacher did everything to approach the Victory. Together with pupils, they sent to the front parcels with warm things, handed over jewelry and bonds to the defense fund, collected means for construction of planes of the “Young pioneer” squadron.
Contribution of Turkmens in victory has gained a deserved evaluation. Among awarded with medals for the valorous work, there were many teachers who with honour and advantage carried out the holy duty during wartime. A patriotic actions are carried out in their memory at all schools of Turkmenistan.
