The holiday was established in 2013 on the initiative of President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov with the aim to increase the status of Ashgabat as a symbol of ambitious changes taken place in the country, to ensure the growth of its international authority as a political centre, where the supreme regulatory and administrative authorities are located and the crucial decisions are taken as well as the city that sets up the high paces of development in the socio-economic, scientific and educational as well as cultural spheres.

Ashgabat Day is a great social, political and cultural event in the life of the state. The capital of our Motherland demonstrates the potential of our opportunities to the world, symbolizes the growth, stability and prosperity of Turkmenistan.

With the proclamation of independence, Ashgabat got the important and responsible mission to become the main city of the Turkmens from all around the world, the place that unites them and the citadel of the national statehood. Having gained the international status of a sovereign state, Ashgabat has become an integral symbol of the country along with the National Flag, Emblem and Anthem. The Law “On the status of the capital of Turkmenistan” secures the particular status of Ashgabat. The Monument “My White City Ashgabat” is the architectural a symbol of the Turkmen capital.


Today, Ashgabat is a dynamically developing city that accumulates creative energy and aspires for new accomplishments with the impetuosity of Ahalteke horse. The concept for development of Ashgabat initiated by the President of Turkmenistan focused on turning the white-marble capital of Turkmenistan into one of the most beautiful, comfortable and most visited cities in the world.

High technologies and communications, transport and construction contribute to development of the national economy of the Turkmen capital. As was noted during a meeting on the development of the Turkmen capital on May 17 this year, in accordance with the plan of development of etraps in Ashgabat in 2015-2016, 383 large industrial and social facilities have already been built and put into operation this year. It is planned to complete construction of 276 facilities by the end of the year.


Particular attention is paid to the improvement of road and transport infrastructure. Modern highways in the city vividly reflect the creative power of the Turkmen state. The districts in the Turkmen capital are connected with transportation and communication systems, including road bridges, overpasses, interchanges, wide radial and ring roads. The Archabil Avenue, a world-class highway has become one of the brightest symbols of Ashgabat as a major regional centre. The Chandybil Avenue recognized by the prestigious quality certificate «CETE APAVE Cudeurope» can serve as an example of the best road construction.

Ashgabat today is a national center of technological progress and innovation. There are scientific and higher educational institutions in the capital. Opening of the Centre for Technologies of the Academy of Sciences of Turkmenistan offered a powerful impetus to the innovative development of the country. Particular attention is paid to the development of medical industry, business travel, organization of international meetings in order to establish multilateral relations and economic ties.


Strengthening the prestige of Ashgabat as a political centre of the regional and international level. The status of the capital as a new centre for business activity significantly increases.

Ashgabat rightfully has won another prestigious title - a regional sports center. In 2017, the capital of Turkmenistan will host the V Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games. The Olympic Village, where the Asian Games will be held, has no analogues in Central Asia and represents the aspiration of our country for new heights and achievements confirming the status of Turkmenistan as the world sports power.

Our foreign guests call Ashgabat “The Pearl of the East”, noting that the architectural design of the capital harmoniously combines the motifs of the East and modern technologies. The outstanding sights of Ashgabat, symbolizing the pulsation of change and cultural and historical traditions of the people are included in the Guinness Book of Records. Among them are the Observation wheel of the Älem Cultural and Entertainment Centre and the Oguz Khan star of the Turkmenistan Broadcasting Centre. Ashgabat was marked as a city with the biggest architectural fountain complex “Oguz Khan”. The Turkmen capital appeared on the pages of the Book of Records for the first time in 2008 with the highest flagpole. In 2013, Ashgabat was noted by the Guinness Book of Records as having the most white-marble buildings in the world.


However, the capital of Turkmenistan is not only a breakthrough in the field of architecture. It is also the city comfortable for life. Luxury residential complexes with developed infrastructure, ultra-modern, high-tech health centres, schools, kindergartens, theaters, buildings, museums, libraries are built in the capital.

Undoubtedly, beautiful white-marble Ashgabat is the result of hard work of many thousands of people but the initiator and inspirer of the remarkable achievements, ‘the general architect’ of the rapid prosperity of the Turkmen capital, enhancement of its international status is President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov. The capital of Turkmenistan is the city symbolizing the progressive movement. With its magnificent look and ambitious achievements, Ashgabat declares itself as the capital of the new millennium, symbolizing the high spirit of the Turkmen people, the continuity of traditions, the wealth of culture and tradition, diligence, talent, love for peace and aspiration for the heights of progress and prosperity.
