The President of Turkmenistan received UN Under-Secretary-General

President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov received UN Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs Wu Hongbo who arrived to Turkmen capital.

Having expressed his gratitude for the opportunity of personal meeting, the high-ranking guest passed the warm greetings to the head of the State from the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon who addressed his wishes of success and prosperity to all Turkmen people. As it was mention, the United Nations Organizations sees Neutral Turkmenistan as reliable and accountable partner and highly values the active and initiative position of Turkmen Part in the area of consolidation of regional and international cooperation, development of solutions for actual subjects of the global agenda.

Welcoming Mr. Wu Hongbo, President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov highlighted that gradually implementing the strategy of positive neutrality, our country advocates broad constructive coordination aimed at provision of universal peace, security and sustainable development. Having returned the greetings and best wishes to the UN Secretary-General, the Head of the State stated with delight the strategic character of the partnership with the United Nations Organizations, which is being filled with new content every year. The fruitful cooperation of Turkmenistan with largest specialized departments and structures of the UN including with the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs built on long-term basis is visual evidence of this.

In the course if the meeting, the Leader of the Nation and his high-ranking guest discussed the perspectives of further expansion of effective coordination including in such priority directions as achievements of the Sustainable Development Goals. In this relation, the importance of creative initiatives proposed by Turkmenistan related to the activation of mutually beneficial international partnership in such spheres as regional and global transit and transport infrastructure, provision of energy security, ecology, etc. was highlighted. These proposals made from the podium of the UN General Assembly and other forums received general approval and support of the world society.

The main subject of exchange of the views was the most important aspects of cooperation in transport and communication sector that is one of the key segments of the world economy and integral factor of sustainable development affecting the stability and balance of e world economic system. As it was highlighted, supporting broad coordination in this direction including in the UN format, Turkmenistan initiates and implements large-scale projects together with foreign partners, bringing considerable input into formation of international combined transit and transport infrastructure.

The first Global conference for sustainable transport system, which will take place in Ashgabat in this year, is summoned to give new stimuli to realization of the huge potential in this field. In this context, the priority subjects of preparation for this largest forum, which draft concept was developed by Turkmen Part together with the UNDESA and International Road Transport Union (IRU) became the target of detailed discussion.

Having highlighted the actuality and demand for the initiatives of the President of Turkmenistan in transport sector, proven by the fact of adoption by the United Nations General Assembly of relative Resolutions in 2014 and 2015, Mr Wu Hongbo expressed his cordial gratitude to the Head of the State for the utmost support and assistance in the matters of development od international partnership in this strategic sphere. Noted that favourable geographic location of our country stipulates its strengthening status as important transit and transport hub of regional and continental importance, the UN Under-Secretary-General also expressed his confidence in the success of forthcoming Global conference, the decision on to conduct it in Ashgabat indicates the high authority of Turkmenistan in the world arena.

President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov emphasized that while having considerable transit and transport potential, Turkmenistan seeks for its realization with maximum outcome, implementing target national programmes for combined modernization of logistics base and infrastructure of transport industry in all its segments, establishment of modern logistics centres. Having thanked the UN for support rendered to international initiatives of our country, the head of the State said that Turkmenistan would undertake all necessary efforts to provide the high organizational level of the international form.

Highly appreciating innovative transformative policy taken by President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, stipulating the advancing social and economic progress of the country and its growing international authority, the UN Under-Secretary-General also noten the needs for positive experience of Turkmenistan, which demonstrates weighed and prescient approach to the subjects of regional and international partnership in different spheres. Taking the opportunity, Mr Wu Hongbo also warmly congratulated the Head of the State with momentous event – appointment of our country as Vice-chairman of the Regular Session of the UN General Assembly, what would undoubtedly write new bright page in the history of traditional bilateral cooperation.

Highlighted that Turkmenistan is always open for equitable fruitful dialog, the leader of the Nation confirmed the intention of our country to continue supporting in every possible way the consolidation of combined efforts under the UN aegis for achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals and solution of related specific issues.

In the conclusion of the meeting, the high-ranking guest expressed his high appreciation to the head of the State for warm welcome and detailed conversation on priority directions of cooperation.

In bidding farewell, President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov and the UN Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs Wu Hongbo expressed their confidence in further continuation of traditional partnership between our country and the United Nations Organization aimed at long-term perspective and meeting the interests of universal peace and wellbeing.
