Turkmenistan is actively involved in addressing global, regional and national environmental issues, having ratified a number of UN environmental conventions, including those aimed at restoration and protection of land resources. President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdymuрamedov has repeatedly called upon from the UN tribute to coordinate international efforts to resolve global problems, to make a number of constructive proposals, including water issues and the Aral Sea crisis, as well as creating under UN auspices the Regional Center of Climate Change Technologies.

Turkmenistan actively cooperates with regional and international organizations to improve monitoring system, land resources’ conditions, integrated management of irrigated lands, sustainable management of forests and grazing areas. The country has implemented national environmental programs and joint environmental projects with UNDP, UNEP, the Zukkova Foundation, the Adaptation Fund, which contribute to preserve an environment in the region.

Phase II Program titled “Initiative countries of the Central Asian on land management" is being prepared and Turkey is planning to join it. The program area aimed at land management in dry and saline soils. The first consultation meeting with representatives of various agencies and government institutions of the Region was held in May of this year with participation of the Ministry of Agriculture and Water Resources of Turkmenistan, as well as international organizations.

It is prepared a concept of a new joint project with the Zukkova Foundation in the field of nature conservation and biodiversity of deserts, aimed to bring together ecologists of three countries - Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan. It is implemented a long-term project of State Committee of Turkmenistan for the environment and protection of land resources in collaboration with UNDP and the Adaptation Fund on water conservation and afforestation. One of the permanent partners of our country is the Regional Environmental Centre for Central Asia (CAREC), which celebrates this year its 15th anniversary. The Centre coordinates regional cooperation in the field of environmental management and sustainable development, adapting to climate change to improve the environmental culture. In the next two years, Turkmenistan will chair the Board of Governors of CAREC. As part of the National Forest State Committee for environmental programs and land resources in conjunction with the Regional Environmental Centre it is implemented a project on planting trees in Akhal and Dashoguz regions.

On initiative of President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, it is increasing production of agricultural products in the country due to improvement of irrigated areas and enhancement of the productivity of livestock. The state program of water-saving irrigation technology development is going on. It has built drinking water plants and improved wastewater treatment systems, intensified scientific and technical research, including - monitoring of desert ecosystems state, the rational use of pastures. It is established an effective legal framework for the use of land, water and forest resources, development of specially protected natural territories.

Desertification is one of the global processes of climate change and land degradation. In 1994 it was adopted by the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), which is currently signed by 191 countries, including Turkmenistan. Within the framework of the provisions of the UNCCD in Turkmenistan implemented National Action Programme to Combat Desertification, in a range of tasks which includes rational use of pastures, forestry development, consolidation and a forestation of moving sands, improvement of irrigated lands, implementation of priority scientific and applied research. The country is implementing the National Strategy of Turkmenistan on climate change, and in its framework - National Forest Programme of Turkmenistan. The targeted activities are continuing in the area of the Aral Sea region of Turkmenistan, the "Avaza" national tourist zone. Activities for protection and rational use of natural resources of the desert are widely covered in the international scientific and practical journal "Problems of Desert Development", which is published in Ashgabat.

As a result of many years of research laboratories painstaking work of the National Institute of Deserts, Flora and Fauna of Turkmenistan of the State Committee for Environmental Protection and Land Resources of Turkmenistan it was developed effective methods of improvement of degraded ecosystems, enhancing its productivity. The Institute is engaged for decades and takes a leading status in Central Asia in the field of Desert Research and drafts recommendations for its further application to hold environmental activities during construction and operation of various objects taking into account conditions of arid territories. In order to protect against deflation processes such as sand filling of various industrial facilities, and roads, pipelines it is undergoing various work such as phytomeliorative which creates favorable conditions for biodiversity, sustainable development of ecosystems. One of the most important large-scale environmental facilities to curb the desertification process is the construction of the Turkmen Lake "Altyn Asyr" - a unique hydraulic and environmental project. Creating an artificial lake is an effective mechanism for pasture lands and creating oasis in the middle of the desert.
