Turkmenistan celebrated the holiday dedicated to melon, «the queen of field»

There was large music celebration in the capital cultural and entertainment centre “Parahat” in the programme of events. Museum of Visual Arts hosted theme exhibition of creative works of artists and sculptures and the State Library of the State Cultural Centre – books exhibition dedicated to “the queen of melon field”


Scientific and practical conference, gathered representatives of structural departments of the Ministry of Agriculture and water Management, leading melon growers, famous agrarian scientists, selectionists and workers of agricultural complex have been held in the conference hall of the Agricultural Complex of Turkmenistan. Exchange of opinions on range of subjects related to further improvement of selection of different breeds of cucurbitaceous cultures on scientific base was held during the forum.


Bright exhibitions and fairs, demonstrating everlasting generosity of native land, were enveloped in all cities and villages of the country on occasion of the day of Turkmen melon on Sunday. Huge pyramids of golden melons, looking like thousands of small stars from the sky, occupied squares and parks. Mountains of watermelons and pumpkins rises beside. Performances of different artists, folk bands and pop singers took places at music halls and open concert stages.


The main events on occasion of the day of Turkmen melon were conducted on Sunday evening on the territory of Ashgabat Equestrian Complex. Large exhibition of production of native agricultural complex were enveloped there. Of course, honey melons, peerless by its taste and carefully grown by farmers and brought to the capital from all velayats, were placed in the centre of the exposition. As is known, there are 400 elite sorts of Turkmen melons among 1600 breeds registered by international science. This variety is supported and developed by every generation of melon growers relying of centuries-old traditions and heritage of national selectionists as well as modern scientific experience.


There are early, fast-ripening, summer, autumn – winter and winter breeds like “vaharman”, “gulyabi”, “akmaral”, “zamcha”, “handyalek”, “ak gurbek”, “gara gurbek” and many others. Juicy, aromatic melons with tender honey pulp, decorated by fanciful sun ornaments, which taste is unforgettable once someone tried it at least one time, are national heritage and proud of our people.


The Turkmen melon has rich history. From old times, it was grown in Murgab, Tejen and Amudarya Rivers’ valleys. Archaeological findings of melon seeds, which were found during excavations at ancient settlements in Merv and Kunyaurgench, testify that melon growing sprang as far back as in antique epoch. This tasty amber fruit was supplied from Turkmenistan by the Great Silk Road to Mediterranean coasts, by caravans over Ural Mountains and Volga River. The melon was known to Greeks and Romans. It decorated tables of Arabic khalifs, Chinese emperors and Indian, Iranian and European monarchs.


The melon is referred as “the queen of the field” and it deserves such title as both dainty delicacies and fount of nutrition and healing substances and simply as golden symbol of generous south sun and beautiful union of human and nature.


The award ceremony of winners of traditional competition of the best melon growers, enveloped all velayats of the country, became the culmination of the events in honour of the Day of Turkmen melon. On behalf of President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, best native melon growers and selectionists were presented with valuable gifts.
