On August 21, Turkmenistan holds elections of Mejlis deputies, members of Khalk maslahaty and Gengesh instead of those left. The election was preceded by an active electoral campaign held by all three political parties of Turkmenistan - Democratic, Agrarian, Party of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs and the major unions, Women's and Youth organizations. Based on the elections’ results, Turkmen women are confidently exercising authority.
Of the seven newly elected national Parliament (Mejlis) three of them are women. It is important to note that the candidates to the deputies are nominated by four women. The compositions of district members of Khalk maslahaty are elected 22.2 percent of women, and members of local Gengesh - 14.6 per cent are women from the total number of elected.
Creating equal rights and opportunities is an important part in ensuring the active participation of women in political, economic and social life of the country. In 1996, Turkmenistan jointed to the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women, in 2009 - to the Optional Protocol. Turkmenistan also adopted the Programme of the Beijing Platform for Action of the IV World Conference on Women.
Among the highly effective for fulfillment of gender policy refers measures taken on the initiative of President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov. In January 2015, it was adopted the National Action Plan on Gender Equality in Turkmenistan for 2015-2020; in August of the same year it is adopted the new Law of Turkmenistan "On state guarantees of ensuring equal rights and equal opportunities for women and men". In general, these measures bring tangible results. Thus, the proportion of representation of employed women in economic sector is now 44 per cent, while in the private sector is even higher - about 47 percent. The woman leads the Parliament of the country, all governor deputies (executive authorities in the regions, cities and districts) are women. A lot of women among the heads of ministries and departments, they also lead some mass media. These and other facts are evidence of the fact that the state policy attaches special importance to gender equality, the conditions conducive for the political advancement of women by the chain of command.
Recognition of the successes of our country in this sphere is the fact that in April of the 2015 year, Turkmenistan was elected to the Executive Board of the United Nations structure on gender equality and empowerment of rights and opportunities of women for the period 2016-2018. With the aim to implement the National Action Plan on Gender Equality in August of this year, a working group under the Interdepartmental Commission on compliance with international commitments in the field of human rights and international humanitarian law of Turkmenistan was developed a "road map" within the framework of which the leading ministries, specific actions, deadlines and expected results are clearly defined.
