The round-table meeting brought together the Mejlis deputies, members of the working group of the Interdepartmental Commission on ensuring Turkmenistan’s compliance with international obligations in the field of human rights and international humanitarian law, representatives of UN agencies and diplomatic missions accredited in Turkmenistan. The meeting has launched constructive partnership between the government structures and civil society in Turkmenistan.
The event, organized by UNDP and the National Institute for Democracy and Human Rights under the President of Turkmenistan in the framework of the National Action Plan on human rights in Turkmenistan for 2016-2020, was aimed at enhancing the role of the civil society in achieving the objectives of Global Agenda for the period until 2030. Taking a responsible approach to the implementation of sustainable development to ensure security and protection of human rights, Turkmenistan contributes to developing and strengthening public associations.
In the framework of the thematic sessions, the meeting participants discussed the legal basis for the activities of public associations, the role and potential of civil society as a factor of social and economic development, the UNDP experience in developing of national NGOs.
The representatives of public organisations, including Yenme, Mashgala, Ynanch Vepa, Agam", Keyik Okara, Disabled Support Center, the Women's Union among others told about the priority aspects of their work, aimed at providing social support in the context of the Sustainable Development Goals. The representatives of government institutions, in their turn, expressed their intention to strengthen cooperation with civil society.
