Having actively cooperated with the United Nations, its leading professional institutions, UNHCR and International Organization for Migration and other authoritative bodies, Turkmenistan makes a significant contribution to efforts in these areas to ensure the rights of refugees and asylum who do not have citizenship. Keeping basic international legal instruments and the relevant UN Conventions, our country is in fact confirms the commitment to fulfill the assumed obligations, as well as the principles of humanism, justice, democratic development and the modern legal society.

9 December 2016 President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov signed a decree on granting the citizenship of Turkmenistan to 1 thousand 381 people.

In recent years, our peaceful prosperous Fatherland became a second home for many people, because of certain reasons and circumstances they had to leave their native places. As a specific example, from 2011up to 2015 years by the degree of President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov 5 thousand 74 people were admitted to the citizenship of Turkmenistan. Previously, thousands of people were citizens of our country on a voluntary basis.

The significant experience gained by Turkmenistan in addressing issues related to stateless persons, refugees and migrants is the subject of concerned by the international community. As a strategic participant in regional and global processes, our country has repeatedly hosted the largest representative forums on humanitarian issues. So, of course, a landmark event was held in Ashgabat in 2012. The international conference on "Refugees in the Muslim World", an initiative to hold a voice by the head of state Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov at the 66th session of the UN General Assembly received general approval and support. By the way, the agenda of the special session of the Forum was included and was dedicated to Turkmenistan's practical experience in the field of social and legal integration of refugees.

In 2014, upon suggestion of the Turkmen side in Ashgabat was held "International Conference on migration and statelessness: Identifying challenges and the way forward". A year earlier it hosted the forum, organized by Turkmenistan in cooperation with IOM and dedicated to the theme of the general consolidation of efforts in countering the threats of our time, and, in particular, human trafficking.

Signed last week, by the head of the state decree on granting the citizenship of the country, the group representing twenty-one nationalities became a new effective step to steadily implement a progressive public policy strategy of Turkmenistan, directly conjugated with the priorities of the UN goals to achieve universal well-being and sustainable development.

According to the decree, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Internal Affairs, State Migration Service, together with other relevant ministries and departments ordered to continue work on the registration documents of stateless persons who have applied for the adoption of the citizenship of the country, followed by the introduction of the relevant proposals to President of Turkmenistan.
