During extended session of the Government of Turkmenistan on January 13, President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov signed the Resolution regulating all-nation tree and shrub planting campaign in 2017.

Large-scale work for increase of natural forests and afforestation of the territories surrounding recreational and cultural zones evidence the steadfast fulfilment of international obligations on three main environment conventions – On Biological Diversity, On Climate Change and On Combat Desertification. Forest plantations are ecologically safe and natural ecological of natural balance in the area where cultural and natural zones meet.

According to the resolution, three million trees will be planted all around the country in 2017 – one and half million during two green and shrub planting seasons – early in the spring and late in the autumn. It would be leaf-bearing and conifer trees as well as fruit trees and vines. Traditionally, the planting will be located in natural and woodland park zones around the cities and villages. The territories along the railways and highways are subjected to afforestation as well. Another green and shrub planting campaign will expand man-made forest areas around the cities, settlements, in foothills, along the banks of rivers and canals, at sea coast.

The forthcoming campaign is an important aspect of National Forest programme (2012 – 2020) stipulating green and shrub planting activities in Avaza National tourist zone and planting of desert species near Botendag Elevation in the Aral Sea impact zone.

The ministries and departments, capital and regional administrations will coordinate the activities of the campaign. The State Committee of Turkmenistan forEnvironment Protection and land Resources will provide the transplants and will provide environmental monitoring.

Forest Management Department mentioned that substantial amount of young plants was grown in nursery gardens for spring season. Recommendations for forestry and care for young plantations, taking into consideration soil and climate specification of each region and the plants for local landscape, were developed.

Planting works will be undertaken with participation of the forestry specialists. Two hundred experts with maps of the plantations will consult the participants of green and shrub planting campaign, which success is promoted by many years of experience in growing plants in arid climate and by the practice of desert development.

Acclimatization of the plants, which are new in Turkmenistan, undergoes in Ashgabat Botanical Garden of the Institute of Biology and medicinal Plants of the Academy of Sciences of Turkmenistan. Large number of species of Eastern Asian and North American flora underwent introduction in Ashgabat climate conditions for more than 80-years history of Botanical Garden. Planting of trees and decorative bushes, new to Turkmenistan, serves to protection and improvement of biodiversity of natural environment. The planters responsibly approach the selection of the plants for certain regions, combining conifer and leaf-bearing species and using optimum irrigation schedule.

It is not just saline and waste lands, which are not used in agriculture, which are being planted. Large work in this direction is undertaken inside the cities. Implementation of innovative principles of ecological tree and shrub planting including establishment of tree plantations inside and outside the cities, new park zones and various landscaping architectural facilities are an important step for minimization of anthropogenic load. Developed system of green and shrub planting of the urban environment brings positive effect on the purity of the air and is important factor of environmental safety.
