In 2016 the management of agricultural production has been reorganized and its efficiency increased

An important aspect of agricultural policy in Turkmenistan in 2016 was the creation of an effective agribusiness management system. In January, on the basis of a number of branch offices, the Ministry of Agriculture and Water Resources and the State Committee for Environmental Protection of Turkmenistan environment and land resources have been established.

The volume of wheat collected in 2016 exceeded 1.6 million tons, compared with 1991, the increase was close to 8 times. Turkmenistan is an exporter of wheat and flour, and the volume of cotton produced annually in the country exceeds 1.1 million tons.

In 2016, in the whole agro-industrial complex of production, the growth rate of production volume, works and services has reached 104.9 percent. In comparison with 2015, the amount of harvested rice has increased by almost two times, potatoes - by 31.1 percent, melons - by 13.6 percent, vegetables - by 7 percent. The growth of production of meat and livestock, as well as eggs and fruit has been ensured. At the same time, the production of canned fruits and vegetables has increased by 18.5 percent, flour - by 7.3 percent, bakery products - by 1.9 percent and cereals - by 19.7 percent.

High yields are achieved due to intensification of agricultural production, the use of recognized varieties of cotton and cereal crops, introduction of modern agricultural technologies. At the same time, virgin lands are being actively explored.

Last year, farmers have timely completed sowing of winter crops, laying the foundation for future harvest. The bread fields in country have occupied 760,000 hectares, from which in 2017 farmers have collected 1.6 million tons of grain.

The country is actively developing animal breeding, poultry farming, vegetable farming, horticulture, viticulture, melon growing, beekeeping and other agricultural business.

The share of private sector in agriculture has already exceeded 90 percent. In particular, the members of the Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs in 2016 have produced a total of 1,3 billion manat worth of products. This is 68,1 percent more that in 2015.

In 2016, the etraps of Ak Bugday and Tedjen in Ahal welayat, Karabekewul etrap of Lebap welayat and Karakum etrap of Mary welayat have had construction of new livestock breeding complexes with a total capacity of more than 200 tons of products per year. The facilities are being constructed by contracts from State Union of Food Industry, and are planned to become operational in 2018.

The regions of the country are actively participating in the construction of numerous greenhouses, the creation of infrastructure for the production of meat and dairy products, the cultivation of vegetables and fruit. In Dashoguz welayat, under the contract from State Union of Food Industry, a new refrigerated warehouse facility with the capacity of 3 thousand tons of products has become operational.

Turkmen wine-growers have once again proven their high professionalism by adding to their collection of medals with a new series of prizes and medals from International Competition “Yalta. The Golden Gryphon 2016”. Turkmenistan has presented 8 kinds of products and all of them have been noted with high awards.

The construction of Turkmen Lake “Altyn Asyr” in the Karakum desert is one of the brightest examples of significant input of Turkmenistan into preservation of water resources. An important place in the state nature protection policy is taken by National Forestry Program. During the forestry campaign in 2016 a total of over 3 million trees and vines have been planted.

Key directions of the National Program for the improvement of social and living conditions of the population in the villages, towns, cities, etraps and etrap centers include housing construction, development of transport and municipal infrastructure, health, education, culture, small business development, implementation of investment projects on creation of new agro-industrial enterprises as triggers of economic growth in the regions.
