The bronze medal in the clean and jerk was won by the master of sports from Turkmenistan Gaigysyz Torayev at the 88th World Weightlifting Championships held in Riyadh (Saudi Arabia). The student of the Turkmen State Institute of Physical Culture and Sports achieved this success in the non-Olympic weight category up to 81 kg, in which 29 athletes from 26 countries were declared. However, after the weigh–in, the most famous of them - the world record holder, two-time Olympic champion of Rio de Janeiro and Tokyo, three-time world champion of 2015, 2018 and 2019 Shi Zhiyong from China withdrew from the competition, and 28 athletes fought for medals.

Gaigysyz realized all six of the six scoring attempts. In the snatch, he showed the 11th result (150 kg), and in the clean and jerk - the third (193 kg), losing 2 kg to the owner of the small silver medal Bozhidar Dimitrov Andreev from Bulgaria. As a result, in the total of the two exercises, our compatriot took 6th place (343 kg), 9 kg behind the bronze medalist Mukhammadkodir Toshtemirov (Uzbekistan) - 352 kg (164 + 188). Silver was awarded to Rahmat Erwin Abdullah (Indonesia) – 354 kg (145 + 209), and gold to Italian weightlifter of Cuban origin, European champion in 2023 Oscar Reyes Martinez (Italy) – 356 kg (163 + 193).

Gaigysyz Torayev started weightlifting in Sakarchage etrap with the coach Shatlyk Durdyklychev. Currently, he is improving his skills with the head coach of the national team Mansur Rejepov.

In June this year, Gaigysyz, who turned 20 on April 11, became a silver medalist at the qualifying Olympic tournament in Havana, the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) Grand Prix. At the current World Championships, he set a personal record in the total of the two exercises (343 kg), improving by 24 kg the previous achievement set at the Asian Championship-2022 in Manama (Bahrain) and repeated at the Olympic qualification tournament in the capital of Cuba.

In the same weight category, Maksat Meredov took 14th place with a result of 319 kg (141 + 178).

Turkmenistan is represented at the current World Championship by 15 athletes (10 men and 5 women).

In the women's tournament, Yulduz Jumabaeva (weight category up to 49 kg) with a result of 161 kg (70 + 91) took 27th place, Kristina Shermetova (up to 59 kg) with a total of 181 kg (81 + 100) – 35th place. And in the men's tournament, Seyitjan Mirzaev (up to 61 kg) with a score of 260 kg (120 + 140) finished in 27th position, and Bunyad Rashidov with a total of 301 kg in two exercises entered the eight strongest athletes in the weight category up to 67 kg. In the same weight, the vice-champion of the world and Asia among youths (under 17) Perkhat Bagtyyarov with a score of 275 kg (120 + 155) took 14th place. Shatlyk Shokhradov (up to 89 kg) finished his performance at the same place, gaining 351 kg (160 + 191 kg) according to the results of two exercises.
