Eight universities of Turkmenistan have entered the UI GreenMetric World University Ranking, which was published recently based on the results of 2023.
UI GreenMetric World University Ranking is an annual ranking that measures universities' efforts to improve their environmental infrastructure and their contribution to sustainable development in environmental conservation.
In particular, universities of world are evaluated based on 6 criteria: university infrastructure and its impact on the environment; energy consumption and savings indicators; waste recycling; environmental education and research; rational use of water resources; and transportation policy.
The leader among Turkmen universities is the Oguz Han Engineering and Technology University of Turkmenistan, which ranked 432nd, rising 205 positions compared to last year. The university scored a total of 6660 points, demonstrating good results in all criteria for evaluating world universities.
S.A.Niyazov Turkmen Agricultural University, newcomer of the rating, has distinguished itself in terms of its performance and with a small gap from the Oguz Han University was placed on the 456th line.
It is worth noting that this year, five Turkmen universities entered the ranking for the first time: S.A. Niyazov Turkmen Agricultural University, Y. Kakayev International University of Oil and Gas, State Energy Institute of Turkmenistan, Turkmen Agricultural Institute and Turkmen State Institute of Finance.
Three more universities: the Institute of Telecommunications and Informatics of Turkmenistan, the Oguz Han Engineering and Technology University of Turkmenistan, and the Institute of Engineering, Technical and Transport Communications of the country have participated in the ranking not for the first time.
The ranking is compiled by the University of Indonesia since 2010. In the first ranking, 96 universities took part in it, and since its creation, the number of participants has increased significantly. This year, the UI GreenMetric Ranking includes 1,183 universities from 85 countries.
Every year, universities provide the relevant data to participate in the ranking, which is then researched and analyzed by independent international experts, specialists and scientists. Universities are ranked in the global list based on the evaluation of the data and the number of points scored. The final results are published in December.
In 2021, the Institute of Telecommunications and Informatics of Turkmenistan was the first among Turkmen universities to enter the UI GreenMetric Ranking. In 2022, two more Turkmen universities - the Oguz Han Engineering and Technology University of Turkmenistan and the Institute of Engineering, Technical and Transport Communications of the country - appeared in the ranking.
This year, the number of our universities in the global table has increased to eight. This fact shows the high importance given to the issues of ecology, environmental conservation, the development of science and education in this field, both within the universities and in the country. As is known, Turkmenistan strives to achieve its goals and consistently fulfills its commitments, being a participant in a number of international agreements and conventions in the field of environmental protection and rational use of natural resources, aimed at social, economic, ecological and global sustainable development.
