The "Iň gowy haly gurnagy" contest is held among young carpet weavers of the country on the eve of the Turkmen Carpet Holiday, annually celebrated on the last Sunday of May.
Representatives of the etraps of Akhal and Dashoguz velayats were among the first to showcase their skills. The participants competed not only in the art of carpet weaving, but also in their knowledge of carpet patterns.
Turkmen carpets, the national heritage and pride of the people, occupy a special place in the treasury of universal human values. In 2019, the traditional Turkmen carpet making art was inscribed on the UNESCO List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
The rich heritage of folk art, based on centuries-old traditions, is detailed in the books "Living Legend" and "Arşyň nepisligi" ("Heavenly Beauty") by Hero-Arkadag Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov.
Today, high school students study the traditions of national carpet weaving under the guidance of experienced masters. Thanks to practical lessons, the girls learn the historical and cultural heritage of the people from a young age, and learn to work in a team, creating handmade ornaments knot by knot.
The "Iň gowy haly gurnagy" competition is organized by the Ministry of Education of Turkmenistan together with the Central Council of the Women’s Union and the National Center of Trade Unions of Turkmenistan. The finalists of the etrap stage of the competition were awarded diplomas and gifts.
