On the 28th of May, the United Nations Development Program and the US Embassy in Turkmenistan jointly held the first hybrid meeting of the Working Group on Sustainable Economics and Finance.
The Working Group seeks to improve the effectiveness of international organizations and diplomatic missions in the field of finance and economics by promoting closer cooperation with the government of Turkmenistan to achieve the country's common economic growth goals.
The meeting was attended by representatives of the diplomatic community of Ashgabat, who were informed about the goals and planned activities of the Working Group. In addition, reports from development partners were presented and ways to promote sustainable economic and financial development of Turkmenistan through cooperation and open dialogue were discussed.
In the speeches of the speakers representing the organizers of the event, it was noted that the activities of the SEF group will be aimed at assisting the people and government of Turkmenistan in establishing trade links with the world, full participation in the digital and green economy, and ensuring economic opportunities for all. It was emphasized that discussion of issues of economic development and development financing by the UN and partners is especially important in the context of Turkmenistan’s intention to join the WTO and measures taken to improve the business climate and attract investment.
As UN Resident Coordinator in Turkmenistan Dmitriy Shlapachenko noted, «coordinated and flexible approaches are needed to support the country in developing a vibrant and diversified rules-based economy that benefits its people, creates jobs and contributes to financing development and partnerships». And systematic exchange of information will complement the efforts of partners in this direction.
The SEF Working Group plans to meet regularly to create an effective platform to improve coordination, exchange knowledge, raise awareness and strengthen cooperation in economic and financial fields.
