The role of mass media in promotion of gender equality was discussed by the representatives of central and regional press.
The seminar, organized by the representative office of the UN Population Fund, was conducted by Ene Tuyliyeva, the Public Relations Officer.
As is known Turkmenistan adopted National Action Plan on Gender Equality for 2015 – 2020. Mass media has an important role in the formation of gender culture.
During the seminar, the attention of mass media representatives was focused on the principles of gender equality and coming over social stereotypes, which restrain the promotion of the achievement of this parity. The specialists of the UNFPA elaborated on international obligations of the country in this sphere and their implementation in national legislation. The participants were informed on the cooperation of the UNFPA and government structures in provision of equal rights and opportunities of men and women as well as on the partnership in reproductive health and family planning.
Separate session was dedicated to the role of mass media in assertion of the principles of gender parity in social understanding. The representative office of the UNFPA launched a competition “Equal opportunities of men and women in achievement of sustainable development” among national mass media for motivation of the journalists in coverage of this subject. Printing, radio and video materials produced for August 2016 to August 2017 will be evaluated.
