In response to an inquiry from the Ministry of Health and Medical Industry of Turkmenistan, the United States Agency for International Development and the World Health Organization took an expanded assessment of the National Tuberculosis Prevention Program in Turkmenistan.
This research study should lay the foundation for the development of Turkmenistan's next National Strategic Plan for Tuberculosis Control (2026-2030). The review assessed prevention, treatment and attendance, also multisectoral cooperation and civil society participation. International experts visited specialized institutions in Ashgabat, Akhal and Mary velayats, got acquainted with primary health care in the fight against tuberculosis, with the work of the “Tuberculosis Registration and Reporting System” meant to improve tracking of tuberculosis data.
WHO experts assessed the role of primary health care in the fight against tuberculosis. In particular, WHO Regional Adviser on Tuberculosis Askar Edilbaev noted that obtained results will help to exchange advanced practices in the WHO’s European region.
The results of the missions will be included into general report that will be provided to the Ministry of Health and Medical Industry of Turkmenistan and relevant stakeholders to support ongoing TB control and prevention efforts.
