Adaptation to climate change – the topic of the regional meeting

Representatives of Turkmenistan took part in a workshop on validation – voicing for partners the agreed activities for next year and the report done for the current year within the framework of the regional program "Climate Risk Management in Central Asia".

The partnership platform is longstanding, arranged to the specific agro ecological conditions of Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan, implemented on the basis of bilateral agreements, in cooperation with government authorities, basin water management associations of five countries, regional institutions, with the coordination participation of environmental, water and land departments of five countries. In Turkmenistan, such an institution is the Ministry of Environmental Protection. The German Society for International Cooperation provides general assistance to scientific and practical activities.

Among the delegates of our country at the Tashkent meeting were leading specialists of relevant departments in the field of environmental management, agro ecology, economics, water management, as well as representatives of the Nature Protection Society of Turkmenistan. The participants analyzed the risks of natural disasters and the prevailing climate background of recent years, forecasts for the future, the compliance of measures taken in countries to reduce the impact of climate consequences with domestic and regional priorities and needs, and assessed the impact of such phenomena on vulnerable sectors of the economy.

A distinctive feature of the interaction site has become an innovation – the training of trainers, who can subsequently teach other people techniques for relieving the effects of the transformation of the state of nature, weather, climate, ecology, adaptation of agriculture and water management to them, in general, the use of natural resources while observing the standards of care for plants and land. In total, 30 people were trained, they added a profile to their profession – "climatologist-analyst", represent all states of the region, have the knowledge and skills to build a strategy for adapting management, it means, adapting to the conditions of transformation of nature and weather of enterprises, sectors, individual farms or activity profile. The training included lectures, practical exercises and discussions focusing on the needs of vulnerable groups.

The program is funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, operates for five key river basins in Central Asia, and focuses on people and their needs to improve their own prospects and living conditions.
