Turkmen sambo wrestlers won 6 medals - 2 silver and 4 bronze on the first day of the XXIX International Tournament for the Prizes of the President of the Republic of Belarus, held in Minsk.

Over two days, more than 200 athletes from Belarus, Armenia, Bulgaria, Germany, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan are competing for 21 sets of medals - seven each in men's and women's sport sambo, as well as men's combat sambo.

In the Turkmenistan team, silver medals in combat sambo were awarded to Agasapar Mukhadov (79 kg weight category) and Suvkhan Ovezgeldiev (98 kg), who were gold medalists in last year's tournament. Begench Baltaev (79 kg) won bronze in this type of wrestling.

Three more bronze medals were added to our team's tally in women's sport sambo by Aziza Nazarova and Aminat Guvanova in the 50 kg weight class and Merjen Joraeva in the 59 kg category.

Sambo wrestlers will determine the winners in ten weight categories on the final day of the competition at the Sports Palace.

The International Sambo Tournament for the Prizes of the President of the Republic of Belarus has been held since 1997. Last year at this tournament, representatives of Turkmenistan won 15 medals - 4 gold, 3 silver and 8 bronze.

Sambo has practical significance and is very popular in military and law enforcement agencies. On July 20, 2021, this sport received recognition from the International Olympic Committee at the regular session of the IOC Executive Board in Tokyo, Japan.
