Caspian Sea – the sea of friendship and cooperation

In the past, the Caspian Sea was an important trade route that contributed to the development of trade and economic ties, as well as strengthening the friendship and brotherhood of the coastal peoples and bringing their cultures closer together. Mutually beneficial relations between the Caspian littoral states are actively developing in the era of the Revival of the new epoch of the powerful state.

As President Serdar Berdimuhamedov notes, guided by the policy of positive neutrality, Turkmenistan consistently strives to turn the Caspian into a sea of peace, trust and friendship. Our country is committed to strengthening close contacts between the Caspian states in energy, transport and logistics, industry, and trade.

Today, dynamically developing Turkmenistan makes a worthy contribution to forming a new architecture of international relations in the Central Asian region. In world politics, not only the Central Asian but also the Caspian region is now recognized as an important political, economic, and cultural space.

The development of multifaceted partnership in the Caspian region creates new conditions for strengthening friendly and brotherly relations and further enhancing its political significance.

Currently, a wide range of opportunities for cooperation is being created in the Caspian not only for the littoral countries but also for other states, and from this perspective, it is becoming a political bridge uniting peoples.

Thus, Turkmenistan’s foreign policy pays special attention to establishing harmonious and sustainable interstate relations in Central Asia and the Caspian region, as well as ensuring regional peace, security, and cooperation as key conditions for sustainable socio-economic and humanitarian development.

All Caspian littoral states attach special importance to the protection of the Caspian Sea environment. Turkmenistan holds the position that all economic and production activities must ensure the ecological safety of the region, and the ongoing transformations must comply with international standards. Our country draws the attention of neighboring states, partners, and reputable international organizations, primarily the United Nations (UN), to preventing negative environmental impacts on the Caspian Sea and proposes innovative approaches.

Chapter Three of Turkmenistan’s Law “On Specially Protected Natural Territories” states that State Nature Reserves are specially protected natural areas created to preserve and study the genetic fund of animal and plant life, typical and unique ecological and geological systems and landscapes, to create conditions for ensuring the natural course of natural processes and phenomena, and to develop scientific foundations for environmental protection.

In accordance with the law’s requirements, the Hazar State Nature Reserve operates here, established in 1932. Its tasks include studying, restoring, and preserving the ecological complexes of the sea and the coast of several bays in the eastern part of the Caspian Sea.

Today, Turkmenistan is a regular venue for meetings and forums on the Caspian Sea, including sessions of the Special Working Group and meetings of authorized representatives of the littoral states, as well as international conferences aimed at enhancing the effectiveness of joint activities to ensure sustainable development and protection of the Caspian marine environment.
