The ancient Indian holiday of «Diwali», the «Festival of lights», was celebrated in the banquet hall of the «Yyldyz» hotel in Ashgabat. The event was organised by the Embassy of India in Turkmenistan.

Traditionally, Diwali is celebrated every year in the fall. This celebration symbolises the victory of light over darkness and good over evil. A distinctive feature of the holiday is the numerous candles and lanterns with which homes and temples are decorated on this day.

Representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan, diplomatic missions accredited in the country, the Indian diaspora, media, and students attended the event. Newly appointed Indian Ambassador to Turkmenistan, Bandaru Wilsonbabu, expressed his sincere gratitude to President Serdar Berdimuhamedov and the National Leader of the Turkmen People, Chairman of the Halk Maslahaty of Turkmenistan, Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, for their colossal contribution to the development of constructive economic cooperation and the strengthening of cultural and humanitarian ties between the two friendly countries.

Bandaru Wilsonbabu emphasised that India and Turkmenistan are bound by ancient, civilised relations and strong bonds of friendship. In this context, the diplomat reminded the meeting between President Serdar Berdimuhamedov and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, which took place on the sidelines of the SCO summit in Tianjin, China. The ambassador also noted that India views Turkmenistan as a key partner within its «extended neighbourhood» concept and highly values the significant progress the country has achieved in all areas, including regional and global affairs.

Guests at the «Festival of lights» were also delighted by a vibrant cultural program. It reflects, in traditional colours, the depth of Indian culture, which has long become the «hallmark» of the exotic peninsula. The stage featured fiery Indian choreography and performances of hits from famous feature films.
