The Embassy of the Republic of Kazakhstan in Turkmenistan organized a solemn cultural evening in honor of the 180th anniversary of the outstanding Kazakh poet, philosopher and educator Abai Kunanbayev. His name, as the founder of Kazakh written literature and a cultural bridge between peoples, is well known to the inhabitants of Central Asia.

A concert took place on the stage of the Magtymguly National Music and Drama Theatre, bringing together a wide circle of representatives from Turkmenistan’s cultural and public spheres. Invited groups from Kazakhstan - the Dina Nurpeisova Academic Orchestra of Folk Instruments and the “Іnzhu-marzhan” Choreographic Ensemble of the Regional Philharmonic - performed before the guests.

With welcoming remarks, Nurlan Nogayev, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Kazakhstan to Turkmenistan, emphasized the special significance of Abai’s works for the spiritual development of the peoples of Central Asia, noting that the anniversary of the great thinker provided an opportunity to strengthen cultural ties between Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan. 

“The name of Abai unites the hearts of our peoples,” the diplomat stated. “His thoughts on humanism, justice, and enlightenment remain relevant today. We are proud that this concert is being held on Turkmen land, where friendship, culture, and mutual respect are valued.”

The concert program presented a rich palette of Kazakh folk and classical music, including Abai’s kui — musical compositions for the dombra or komuz. The “Іnzhu-marzhan” Choreographic Ensemble demonstrated vivid artistry with dynamic performances harmoniously combining the national motifs of both countries. Melodies by Turkmen composers were also performed, symbolizing the spiritual kinship and shared cultural roots of the brotherly nations.

The evening was complemented by a thematic exhibition in the theater’s foyer dedicated to the poet’s life and work, featuring books, rare editions, and photographs.

As part of the visit, the Kazakh delegation visited the monument to Abai Kunanbayev in Ashgabat. In addition, the delegation held meetings with Turkmen colleagues at several cultural and educational institutions to discuss prospects for further cooperation in the fields of art and culture.
