The Turkmen team “Arkadag” will begin its campaign in the group stage of the AFC Champions League Two 2026/27 season with a home match against Bahrain’s “Al-Muharraq” on September 15.
It should be recalled that, following the draw, these teams were placed in Group “B” alongside “Al-Jazira” of the United Arab Emirates and “Gol Gohar Sirjan” of Iran.
The match between the reigning champions of Turkmenistan and Bahrain will take place in the city of Arkadag at the eponymous stadium, which has a capacity of 10,000 spectators. Kick-off is scheduled for 18:45 Ashgabat time.
“Arkadag’s” first opponent in the new AFC Champions League Two season, “Al-Muharraq,” is one of the oldest and most successful football clubs in Bahrain. It was founded 98 years ago, in 1928. During this time, the team has won numerous domestic and regional titles, including 36 Bahrain Premier League titles and one Gulf Champions League title.
In addition, “Al-Muharraq” won the AFC Cup—the second most prestigious club trophy in Asian football—twice, in 2008 and 2021.
According to experts, the hosts of the upcoming match are the absolute dominant force in their domestic championship and are striving to transfer their devastating form to the international level. The visitors rely on considerable continental experience but have had an inconsistent start to the season. So, which of the two teams will manage to begin the group stage with a victory?
Since 2023, FC “Arkadag” has competed in the top division of the national championship, where it has demonstrated remarkable statistical results, winning all 20 matches with 82 goals scored and 12 conceded. The team is in ideal competitive shape, as the domestic championship is currently in full swing. In the qualifying round of the AFC Champions League Two, it comfortably defeated India’s “Goa” 3–0, proving its strength at its home stadium.
At home, the team relies on total territorial control, intense pressing in the opposition half, and quick combinations down the flanks. In their last five matches, the players have scored 19 goals and conceded only two. However, it should be taken into account that this remarkable scoring record is largely due to the relatively low level of opposition in the national championship, while the Turkmen club’s defence is rarely subjected to genuine tests under pressure from high-quality opponents.
The players of “Al-Muharraq” are experienced international competitors who, as mentioned above, have twice won the second most prestigious Asian club trophy. The start of the current domestic championship season has not gone well for them: in their first three rounds, the club drew 1–1 with “Al-Ahli,” then lost 0–1 to “Al-Ittifaq,” and only in their most recent match managed to defeat “Manama” 3–1. Away matches are causing serious concern for the coaching staff, as “Al-Muharraq” lost two recent fixtures by a score of 0–1.
The Bahraini champions’ tactical model is built around measured positional attacking, but the team noticeably lacks speed when transitioning from defence to attack. The side currently appears physically sluggish, struggles under aggressive pressure from opponents, and allows positional gaps to develop in the central midfield area during quick counter-attacks. Nevertheless, the level of the Bahrain Premier League significantly exceeds that of the Turkmen championship, which, according to analysts, makes the visitors the favourites for the upcoming match.
In the second round, on October 14, “Arkadag” will play away against “Al-Jazira.”
In the third round, on October 28, Vladimir Bayramov’s side will face “Gol Gohar Sirjan.” The match will take place in Tajikistan, where the Iranian club will play its nominal home matches in the tournament. The return fixture will be held in Turkmenistan on November 4.
The group stage for the Turkmen team will conclude with an away match against “Al-Muharraq” on November 25 and a home match against “Al-Jazira” on December 9.
The upcoming group stage of the second most prestigious competition will mark the 22nd edition of the tournament held under the auspices of the AFC. Thirty-two clubs from 23 countries will compete in the group stage. They include five former winners of the tournament—Jordan’s “Al-Faisaly,” Bahrain’s “Al-Muharraq,” Oman’s “Al-Seeb,” Kuwait’s “Al Kuwait,” and Uzbekistan’s “Nasaf”—as well as newcomers to Asian club competitions—Iran’s “Gol Gohar Sirjan” and Malaysia’s “Kuching City.”
During the group stage, the participants will play three matches at home and three away, facing each opponent in their group twice. The top two teams from each group will advance to the Round of 16.
The Round of 16 matches will take place from February 9 to 18, 2027. The quarter-finals will be held from March 2 to 18, the semi-finals from April 6 to 14, and the final on May 15, 2026.
The winner will earn a direct place in the preliminary stage of the AFC Champions League Elite for the following season.
It should be recalled that last season, the players of “Arkadag” advanced beyond the group stage of the AFC Champions League Two and reached the knockout stage, where they lost twice to Saudi Arabia’s “Al-Nassr” in the Round of 16, with both matches ending in identical 0–1 defeats.
