As a rule, travelers start familiarization with the Northern Turkmenistan from Uzboy. Grey and yellow sand dunes stretched until horizon and divided by the riverbed of mysterious Uzboy, the ancient riverbed of the great pre- Amudarya, which used to fall into Caspian Sea long time ago, appears in from of astonished tourist.

There is not water but grey bottom, curve of the river with high external and gentle inner banks. However, in its midstream, it impresses as if it is a live river with banks covered with bushes of reed and tamarisk. The riverbed is filled with bright blue lakes salty brine.

The Uzboy Valley collects subsoil waters from all surrounding territory. Salty waters of the Western Uzboy are famous from the old times with healing power of its water and mineral mud. True miracle, never drying fresh water lakes of Topyatan, Karategelek and the pearl of the desert Yaskhan meet thirsty travelers after Ajikuin Curve and sand hills of lowland Karakum Desert.

“Where this clean and tasty water come from and how is it preserved?” – the travelers wonder, not even guessing that huge water reserve of around two thousand square kilometers, which appeared thousands of years ago, is located under the ground.

Salt lakes of Uzboy are also attractive. They are true natural masterpieces, which have been formed up in the result of shallowing but until now, is fed up from underground sources. Pink lakes of Dordul have special attraction. There are white water pools with layers of sodium salt, which has a healing effect. One of the lakes, which is famous with its healing mud, is located in Kartush-Baba.

The region after Uzboy is quite deserted and severe place with wonderful landscape – flattop hills are alternate with wide lowlands. It seems that surface of the plateau is cut with countless cavities stretched from northwest – to southeast. The depth of these cavities reaches several dozens of meters. The remains, short mountains with average height of 40 meters as well as 300-meter highlands can be met in this place.

Each of them has its own name – Ersary-Baba, Akgyr, Tekjik, Koymatdag, Tuarkyr, Cholker, Kaplankyr… Due to alteration of heights and lowlands, the region is called Uzboy folded region. Same like Ustyurt, the landscape was formed up by residual rock formations – layers of limestone, marl, sandstone, clay.

The place at Begarslan-dag is made of chalk rocks, which associates the place with moon landscape. Canyons of western part of Carabogaz region seems very beautiful. Mountains next Gozly-ata strike with bright palette, brownish and reddish, white and grey range of Aktyr and other remains of former single system of sea lime sediment rocks of later lime period (60 – 65 million years ago).

More ancient and unusual natural formations have been discovered in Sakkar-yol. Huge lime and sand concretions, sometime having two and three level, which reach up to two meters, sit on narrow part 3 kilometers in length next to Gyokdere settlement.

Rookery next to Kemal-ata spring preferred by camels also strikes with fantastic forms of fossils, which combined with saxaul and running water look like a landscape from pre-historical period. Geologists say that these fossils appeared during drying up of the World Ocean and tectonic raise of former seabed.

Travelling across this place, one can see the evidence of past epochs. Although Caspian region is not rich with architectural monuments as other regions of the country, every hill, every gorge or highland are charged with the energy of these historical events.

Burial place Gozly-ata or Uzynhasana – a mystic person and spiritual leader of Balkan Turkmens in medieval, which is popular among local residents and foreign guest, is located in picturesque place. According to the legend, being 102 years old, the wise man has united Turkmen tribes to fight against Sufian-khan from Khiva.

… Lands to the southeast from Caspian Bay have seen many other historical events…

This preserved and beautiful place, which amazes with unique landscape and rich fauna, has huge potential for implementation of cluster approach to organization of tourism and active promotion of ethnographic, recreation and ecological, cultural and historical directions.
