The focus of forum – Baha-ud-Din Naqshbandi’s heritage

The international scientific conference entitled “Baha-ud-Din Naqshbandi and Sufi Literature” dedicated to the life and creative activity of an outstanding representative of XIV-century Central Asian Sufism, prominent thinker and humanist Baha-ud-Din Naqshbandi was held in the capital of Turkmenistan.

The international forum is organized on the initiative and under the patronage of President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov who views revival, study and promotion of the immense cultural heritage of the Turkmen nation in different languages as the national policy priorities.

On the instructions of the Turkmen leader the Academy of Sciences of Turkmenistan is responsible for organizing and holding the international conference. It brought together historians and orientalists, theologians and culture experts, linguists and philologists and workers of culture and art from the United States, the UK, Holland, Greece, India, Iran, Iraq, Turkey, Spain, China, Korea, Morocco, New Zealand, Syria, Bulgaria, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Ukraine.

The ceremony of opening the forum took place at the Mekan Palace in Ashgabat. The cabinet ministers, representatives of the public organisations, mullahs, scientific associates of research institutes, professors, teachers and students of humanitarian higher schools and journalists attended the ceremony.

The welcome address of President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov to forum participants was presented during the opening ceremony. Cordially congratulating foreign experts and specialists, the Turkmen leader expressed belief that the reports they would deliver at the conference would play a significant role in promoting research on the concept of Sufism founded by Baha-ud-Din Naqshbandi and studying an influence of his humanistic views and principles on cultural development of world civilization and his services in enriching and developing Turkmen classical literature.

There was loud applause to the welcome address of the leader of the Turkmen state.

The reports delivered during the plenary meeting by a scientist Alan Godlas from the United States, a philologist Minavaer Aibibula from China, an ethnographer Mamatkuli Joraev from Uzbekistan, a researcher Ismet Izatov from Ukraine, a culture expert Yashar Aydinli Caikar from Turkey were of particular interest to conference participants and guests.

The theme of imperishable significance of the epoch of new Revival for the economic and spiritual progress of the nation stood out in all reports and presentations. Those speaking at the conference underlined the large scale and profoundness of the policy of reforms and wide international cooperation pursued by President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, including in the scientific sphere.

Spotlighting various aspects of Baha-ud-Din Naqshbandi’s life and creative activity in their reports, forum participants paid particular attention to his philosophical views, his links with the pillars of Sufism and his influence on numerous successors who were the members of the community of Sufis known as Nagyshbendiye.

Those speaking at the conference emphasized that Baha-ud-Din Naqshbandi’s doctrine, which combined the concepts of the two schools of Sufism, the first founded by Hoja Ahmed Yasavi and the second founded by Abdulhalyk al-Gijduvani in the 15th century, dominated among Sufi communities of other trends and extended its influence across the Muslim world. The founder of this doctrine performed hajj to Mecca twice and visited Herat where he met with the local ruler who had showed keen interest in his selfless activity. Also it is known that Nagyshbendi visited the Kufen rabat situated near present-day Kaakha where he received a heartily welcome.

In the afternoon the discussions of thematic reports and presentations continued in three sections.

The programme of the foreign guests’ visit to the Turkmen capital included the visits to the Main National Museum, the Turkmen carpet Museum, the Ice Palace, the path of health and the Ylham Park.
