The President visited the Ogurjaly Nature Reserve and drove the quadcycle in its territory. An area of the Ogurjaly Island, which is situated in the southeast of the Caspian Sea, is relatively small – about 9,000 hectares, it stretches about 40 kilometres from north to south and 1.5-2 kilometres from east to west.

…During the visit to the Ogurjaly Nature Reserve, President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov emphasized the importance of enhancing research activities in the region, in particular breeding activities in order to preserve and significantly increase the population of rare animals inscribed on the Red Data Book of Turkmenistan.

The Turkmen leader noted that the environmental issues had become urgent worldwide today. Focusing on the importance of promoting broad international cooperation in this sphere, the Turkmen leader emphasized that the comprehensive approach and concerted efforts of the international community would enable to respond to the global challenges to environmental protection, efficient nature resources management and conservation of biological diversity of the Caspian Sea, would produce a real positive impact on the wellbeing of the peoples residing in the region as well as all mankind.

Another vivid evidence for the readiness of the Turkmen side to deepen and build up partnership in the interests and for the benefit of humanity and the UN Global Millennium Goals are the specific recommendations submitted for consideration to the 68th session of the General Assembly of the United Nations that started its work last week in New York.

In particular, it concerns the enhancement of the effectiveness of the implementation of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification. In this regard, Turkmenistan is ready to host the Conference of Parties to the Convention in 2014.

Turkmenistan considers it reasonable to establish a new mechanism of cooperation under the aegis of the United Nations – the International Environmental Dialogue on the Caspian Sea with the view to concert efforts of the Caspian states to protect the environment.

It should be emphasized that putting forward the initiatives to protect the environment, our country takes concrete steps to implement them. In particular, supporting the global efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, Turkmenistan is applying modern environmentally-friendly and resource-saving technologies in the industrial sector.

The striking examples include the ambitious project for the modernization of the Turkmenbashi complex of oil refineries – the flagship of Turkmenistan’s petrochemical industry. Advanced technologies and technical solutions, which allow preventing damage to the environment, are used to build new plants, reconstruct and modernize existing processing plants and other industrial facilities at the Turkmenbashi complex of oil refineries.

The project for the construction of the new international sea port in Turkmenbashi was developed in compliance with the Green Port international standard. It will be equipped with advanced hardware and software systems which will ensure safety and efficiency of navigation and cargo transportation and protect the environment. Biological treatment units will be installed at each terminal to conserve the marine environment of the Caspian Sea.

According to national specialists and international experts, the Turkmen sector of the Caspian Sea is regarded as most ecologically clean thanks to the systematic and consistent work carried out in this field. This vividly illustrated by the ambitious project of the Avaza national tourism zone on the Caspian seashore designed to use the recreational potential of the region and turn it into a large international tourist centre. The key objectives of the project include the strict compliance of all facilities in the seaside resort with environmental requirements.

Great importance is attached to planting greenery in the seaside resort. In accordance with the General Plan the tourism zone will occupy an area of 5,000 hectares. 2,000 hectares of them will be occupied by the National Park with picturesque natural landscapes. 1,300 hectares are allocated for green parks, gardens, alleys and flower beds. High-tech monitoring systems installed in Avaza in the near future will make it possible to conduct online monitoring of the ecological situation in the seaside resort.

Specialists of the Kaspekogozegchilik Service of the Ministry of Nature Protection conduct environmental monitoring on a regular basis. Its laboratories are supplied with modern equipment for carrying out deep-sea research and conduct analysis of the samples of seawater and sea-floor sediments.

Commenting on the report on these activities and the progress in implementing the environmental programmes, President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov instructed the Minister of Nature Protection and the cabinet ministers to take an integrated approach to the protection of the environment.
