A telephone conversation between the leaders of Turkmenistan and Afghanistan hold

President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov and President of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai held a telephone conversation.

The leaders of the two states exchanged cordial greetings and expressed satisfaction with an opportunity to discuss priority aspects of Turkmen-Afghan relations based on the unbreakable bonds of friendship and good neighbourliness and the principles of constructive cooperation.

Taking the opportunity, the Turkmen leader once again congratulated his Afghan counterpart on his victory in the presidential election and the inauguration and wished President Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai every success in his important work at the high post.

President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov and President Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai highly evaluated the interstate dialogue that had been filled with new content in the present historical epoch. Reaffirming the commitment of Turkmenistan and Afghanistan to promoting traditional partnership, the sides specified its key fields in the context of bilateral agreements and prospects for expanding Turkmen-Afghan cooperation in the trade, economic, humanitarian and cultural spheres.

In this regard, President Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the Turkmen leader and the Turkmen people for their continued assistance in the social and economic revival of Afghanistan, emphasizing that the Afghan people highly evaluated the peaceful policy of neutral Turkmenistan and its constructive international initiatives, including those aimed at addressing Afghanistan related problems.

President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov noted that the Turkmen people were wholeheartedly solidary with the people of Afghanistan in their efforts to build a peaceful and prosperous life, emphasizing that Turkmenistan intends to continue to provide effective support to the neighbouring state, particularly through implementing the electricity infrastructure development projects. In this context, the Turkmen leader noted that power transmission lines would be built toward the border with Afghanistan this year, which will greatly increase electricity exports to the neighbouring country. Turkmenistan will continue to assist its neighbour in building social facilities, such as schools, health centres, etc.

Dwelling upon the topical aspects of Turkmen-Afghan cooperation, President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov and President Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai focused on the implementation of Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India (TAPI) gas pipeline project, which will enable the participating countries to address urgent social problems, particularly through creating new jobs as well as bring them direct economic benefits.

Emphasizing the existing tremendous potential for cooperation in the transport sector, the sides focused on the importance of Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Tajikistan railway. The steel road that will link three neighbouring friendly states will be an integral element that will form diversified transport and communications infrastructure in the Asian region and contribute to increasing freight flows as well as strengthening positive mutually beneficial cooperation on regional and interregional scale.

Calling for deepening bilateral trade and economic relations and building up contacts between entrepreneurs of the two countries, the leaders of Turkmenistan and Afghanistan highlighted the need to intensify the activities of the Intergovernmental Turkmenistan-Afghanistan Commission that aims to diversify fruitful business partnership.

During the conversation the sides exchanged views on topical issues of regional and international politics of mutual interest.

In conclusion, President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov and President Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai expressed belief that traditionally friendly bilateral relations would continue to develop successfully in the whole spectrum. The two leaders also expressed hope for a more detailed discussion of key aspects of Turkmen-Afghan cooperation during a personal meeting.

The leaders of Turkmenistan and the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan wished good health and new accomplishments to each other and peace and wellbeing to the peoples of the two countries.

The telephone conversation took place on the initiative of the Afghan side.
