President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov received Minister of Mines and Petroleum of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan Mohammad Akbar Barakzai, who arrived in the Turkmen capital to participate in the Steering Committee meeting of the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India (TAPI) gas pipeline project.

A lively discussion focused on partnership in the fuel and energy sector, in particular the readiness of the parties to speed up the implementation of the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India (TAPI) gas pipeline project designed to bring benefits to the peoples of the participating country and the region and serve as the bridge of mutual cooperation. In this context, the guest expressed full support of the Afghan side for the initiatives of the President of Turkmenistan to ensure global energy security, facilitate the social and economic revival of Afghanistan, strengthen peace and stability in the region and throughout the world and address other pressing issues of the modern world.

Noting that Turkmenistan considered every project in terms of economic feasibility and commercial benefits that it brought to participating countries, President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov emphasized that Turkmenistan’s intention to expand gas transit infrastructure was more than logical. The creation of transport corridors, including the implementation of the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Tajikistan railway project, is deemed to be not less promising and profitable at the regional scale. This route promises to be an integral element in the development and diversification of transport infrastructure in the Asian region. The ongoing projects also include the development of electric power infrastructure.

Upon concluding the meeting, the Turkmen leader and the Minister of Mines and Petroleum of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan expressed belief that Turkmen-Afghan relations would continue to be strengthened and develop on the basis of the best traditions of friendship, good neighbourliness and mutual goodwill.

Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan to Turkmenistan Mohammad Fazil Saifi attended the meeting.
